WHERE HAS THE BUZZ GONE?
he river season has landed and that usual excitement and anticipation doesn’t seem to
be around as it once was.
Do you think fewer anglers fish the rivers these days? Or are anglers maybe being extra
guarded about where they’re fishing?
After a lot of reflection I imagine it’s a combination of a few different reasons. Number one on
my list is the advent of commercial fisheries, which provide us all with convenient, easy fishing,
often a short walk from the car, and a lot of these fisheries provide first-rate facilities such as
cafés, toilets and even shower and bar areas.They are fantastic for the survival of the fishing
industry but have, for better or worse, affected the popularity of our nation’s rivers.
Another reason, and this one is somewhat controversial, is the touchy subject of poaching.
I doubt there are many of you reading this that haven’t stumbled across a report bemoaning
the steep increase of poaching, sometimes on a commercial scale, that is going on along our
riverbanks – this can’t instil much confidence in anglers to actually get out on the river bank,
can it?
Although there are a lot of these reports surfacing in the media I’m pretty sure the majority of
our rivers haven’t been affected too much and I’d urge you to get out there and give the rivers
a go this season.The fishing can be fantastic and the skills you’ll learn and quality fish you’ll
catch will take some beating.
We’ve got a feast of river-based goodness for you this month. I’m out on the Warwickshire
Avon catching chub on the float from page 10 and Frankie Gianoncelli
goes really fine for a great bag of running-water silvers from page
