One of the major events of the past week was the match
between the teams of Baden-Baden and Solingen in the
German Bundesliga. Baden-Baden came with an amazing
line-up consisting of Anand, Aronian, Wojtaszek, Svidler,
Adams, Kasimdzhanov, Bacrot and Naiditsch, but this was
"just" enough to draw - against a slightly weaker team
of Solingen with Harikrishna, Rapport etc, so things remain
unclear, with both teams still sharing the lead.
This Friday the Mindgames in China began and it is going to
be a competition consisting of three events: Rapid, Blitz and
Basque chess. In the rapid section Mamedyarov took gold
with / , just edging out Ponomariov thanks to his better
tiebreak.
On the st of March the World Championship Match between
Hou Yifan and Mariya Muzychuk is going to start in in Lviv,
Ukraine.
Then on the th of March the long-awaited Candidates
Tournament will get under way in Moscow.

A very nice attacking game was won by Maxim Rodshtein, a
young talent who just passes the mighty
border.

The Blumenfeld Gambit.
It is a common opening on open tournaments to beat weaker
opponents because of the early complications, however on
the highest level it is a bit risky as it is considered to be slightly
dubious by the opening theory.

The critical response. White does not get greedy by
capturing pawns, but he intends to strengthen his center with
e by pinning the knight. [The point of the Gambit is if White
accepts the sacrifice with .dxe ...fxe .cxb with both
pawn takes in the last two moves, White has given up his
control over the center for a pawn and Black gets longterm
compensation a er ...d ]

Black goes for the bishop pair. The
drawback is that he loses further tempi, which allows White
to get full control over the center. Also the queen gets a bit

He is not developed well enough to keep his healthy pawn
formation on the queenside. In any case, White gets a very
nice c outpost for his knight.

Black tries to get rid of at least one
knight. If he could trade on f and the exchange the other
pair of knight with Nd -e his position could be fine, but White
does not allow this.

This move was already employed succesfully in some
games. What is more strange, that Black has gone for this by
himself without knowing some basic games which would be
necessary if someone plays this opening. This is a standard
break through in this kind of Benoni-like structures. Black
is behind in development, therefore White creates some
