And the European Chess Championship has begun. A er the
first rounds, the big favorites have a perfect score in both
sections, open and women. In the open section, already in
the rd round we will see a huge fight between Ukraine and
Azerbaijan, the Nr and Nr on the starting list.
Already in the first round of the event, we saw some very
exciting games between super GMs and a lot of di erent
upsets and surprises.
For the moment, the team of Norway is playing without
Magnus Carlsen, but we can be sure that in tomorrow’s match
against Armenia the World Champion will take his seat on the
first board.
Russian has so far been playing without Grischuk, probably
keeping him for the more important matches.
Everything else is more or less as usual, the playing hall is not
great, but to call it bad would be unfair as well. The weather
is cold and windy, very usual for Reykjavik.
On the free day, the organizers o er some excursions and to
visit the grave of Bobby Fischer.
So the most important rounds are yet to come in the next
week and we wish you a lot of fun watching the games live.

Another unusual move with the idea of Nd . Black
wants to save the c pawn as long as possible, but he loses
further tempi, while White just developes his pieces to natural
places.

the opening problems right away, however White has a very
nice trick at his disposal.
In the last round, the top seed former World Nr. Alexander
Morozevich has run into a nice defeat.

This move is very popular since the first
World Championship match between Carlsen and Anand,
where the Indian succesfully neutralized the Reti opening with
this move.

The point of delaying the development of the g
knight to f can be seen here. Black wants to play now e and
Ne with a perfect position, therefore White is more or less
forced to transpose to the g system of the Gruenfeld defence.

understand. I dont really get the point of it. Black had a very
strong direct alternative, but even if ...c does not exist, any
other natural developing move like ...Nd should have been
played. [ ...c ! seems to be completely fine now, as Bh does
not work anymore. Nc is coming next, Black equalizes the
game. .Nxd exd and Nc with a balanced game.]

open the game with e or c . He has some space advantage
thanks to the d pawn, sooner or later it will be more di icult
to maneouvre with the black pieces.

very ugly, but Black did not have anything better. The f pawn
had to be defended.

edge of the board, but at least Black has managed to avoid
the concrete problems, although White’s big advantage is
undisputable.

Perfect reaction! White actually closes the diagonal
of the g bishop. He stands ready for the opening of the d-file,
on the other hand the black queen is misplaced and stays in
the pins.

Bachmann leads the game very ambitiously. He
creates the threat of g , which forces another unwanted move
by his opponent.
