How
grand
can
it
be
without the
top
four?
FIDE's
first
Grand Prix
is
history. It
was
started
with
great
ambitions
and
a
great name
(Bessel
Kok
as
head organiser, new venues
in
Karlsbad,
Doha
and
Montreux, though hardly "leading
world
cities"),
but
it
soon became clear
that
not
all-play-alt tournaments.
But
with in
"t..y.ur"
14
players and
91 games
according to
the Sofia
rules,
it
has always
been
a
good result
for the
world
ofchess
and
ofcourse
also
for
ChessBase
Magazine.
everything would
run
as
well
as
was
planned or
hoped.
Attractive only
at
first
glance:
as
well
as
Iots of money
what
was
promised to
the
victor
of the
Grand Prix
was
qualification
for
a
match
against the
winner
of the
2009
World
Cup; the
one
victorious would
become the
WCh
chal-
Ienger.
In
retrospect, the
World
Cup
of
1988/89 can
be seen
as
a
predecessor of the
FIDE Grand
Prix
2008-10.
Why did
it
work then (all
the
top
players
took part), but not this
time? Then
Kasparov and
Karpov
played
a
major part.
After
four WCh
matches (1984-87)
these
two
were presumably keen on
tournament
chess
and the next
WCh
was
not planned
till
1990.
And
at
that time
there were
not
so
many attrac-
tive tournaments. Or
there
was
more money
(for
the
main performers).
From
the
sporting
point
of view, there were
also
surprises,
though not
about the
final winner.
Ofthe
five players
who
have
been
occupying
the
top
places
in
the Elo
list oflate, only Levon
Aronian
was
taking part
and
he
had secured
overall
victory
before the
final tournament.
There were
good
chances
for
second place
-
also
to
be
rewarded
with
qualification
for
the candidates'matches
-
for
Wang
Yue
and
Vugar
Gashimov
-
two
players
who
had
not
re-
ally
come
into
consideration
at
the start of the
series;
nowadays
both of
course
form
part
of
the
wider
elite thanks
to
the
Grand Prix
tourna-
ments. fakovenko, Alekseev and
Eljanov
got
op-
portunities
to play and made good
use
of
them.
In
2008 every,thing
looks different. Anand,
Kramnik
and Topalov refused
to
take
part,
despite
risking
being
left out
of the next
WCh.
And
soon the
first
organisers
ofthe
Grand
Prix
started
to retract
their
offers. \A/hen
finally
FIDE
(once again) changed the rules along
the
way
-
instead of matches there
would only
be
candidates'tournament
with
8
participants
-Magnus
Carlsen
dropped
out
too
and
in
him
the greatest draw
in
all
todays
international
chess.
However, the six
tournaments
finally
took
place successfully.
It
was
great
for
the
remaining participants.
The
aforementioned
motivation
-
WCh
qualification
and
money
-
exerted
a
strong
pull
on
them,
and
in addition
nowadays all players apart the
top
five
in
the
world
have
problems getting invitations to good
a
The
question
is
what
comes next. We
have
heard
nothing
about
any
follow-up, which
is
hardly surprising in view
of experience
so far.
But perhaps Karpov,
who
has
oflate
found
a
consensus
with
Kasparov,
will
become the
new
FIDE president
and the
two
of
them
will bring
back the good
old
days.

The
Kings Tournament
in
Siebenbi.irgen
in
Romania
took
place
for
the
fourth
time
in
fune.
It included for
the
first time
the leading
player
in
the
world ranking list
Magnus Carlsen, and
of course people were keen
to
see
whether
he
would
be
able
to
bring
home
a
similar
triumph
to
his efforts
in
Wijk
at
the start of the
year.
But
the super star
did not really
get
going
at
the
start.
In
the
first
three
rounds
he was
unable'to
obtain
any
tangible
advantage and
in
each
case
had
to put
up
with
a
draw.
So
it
was
high
time
to
try
something different.
,,Up
until
that
point
the
tournament
had
not
been going
so
well,
so
I
thought I would
try
this
and
see
what hap-
pened",
was Carlsen's
comment
after the
fourth
round.
In
it
he
had overcome the Chinese
play-
er
Wang
Yue
with
a
King's
Gambit, which
was
to mark
the
start
of
a
series
of
victories.
Carlsen
won
the
next
three
games
by
exploiting
every

The
breadth
of Carlsen's play
is
just
as
impres-
sive.
It
doesnt matter whether
the
opening
is
tiny
inaccuracy
on the
part
ofhis
opponents.
In
round
7
against Radjabov Carlsen had,
e.g.,
tak-
en
a
minimal
middlegame
advantage
into
the
rook
ending. The
Norwegian himself
has
ana-
lysed
this
game
in
some
detail
on the
DVD
and
points
out where Black
could
have
saved
the
game
with
accurate play. Thus
in
the
position
the King's
Gambit,
the
white
or the black side
of
the
Dragon,
the
Griinfeld
or
the King's
Indian
Defence
-
when playrng Carlsen
you
have
to
be
prepared
for everything,
and, whatever
he
comes up
with,
his
success
is apparently
effort-
less.
With
his second
win
against Wang
Yue
in
round
10
the
Norwegian went two whole points
clear
ofthe
field.
