A er a very turbulent last week with the European Club Cup
and the Bilbao Masters, we are in a calm week of chess.
In the Baku Open, where a lot of
+ players are
participating, Ernesto Inarkiev is leading with / , followed
by a lot of players on . / , such as Areschenko, Artemiev,
Lupulescu, Krasenkow and many more.
The Tseshkovsky Memorial was convincingly won by Baadur
Jobava with a great . / , a full point ahead of other players.
The World Youth Championship is also under way in Durban,
South Africa, but it is pity to see that almost none of the
leading young chess stars are participating in it. All in all,
Indian chess kids are dominating a lot of age groups, followed
by Russians, so there are no big changes in comparison to
previous years.
For next week we can already be very excited about the start
of the Grand Prix series in Baku, Azerbaidjan.

We are going to see a typical Sicilian game: fight, fight fight.
In the beginning of the game White picks a rare line and
gets immediately countered in the center, a er which in a
complicated position White is starting to go wrong. Black is
ending the game with a beatiful combination!

In open tournaments we see openings like
the Paulsen much more o en than in round robin top events.
The simple reason is that you really need to win some games
to get the chance to take some price.

In my opinion Black should be risking more than it is possible

So let’s take a fresh look at the position. The
material is equal but things are looking very strange. White
has the bishop pair and a better development, but the king on
f is very badly placed. In case Black was in time to develop his
pieces and play e , White’s position could become very bad,
so White needs to act quickly.

A very nice move! Before playing Bf , Black brings

It seems like White is more or less solid, but in fact

Once again White just has no choice,
move which defends from Rxh .
Right from the opening the game is getting chaotic. Both sides
are ready for a big fight! At first it looks like Black should be
doing fine, but with a lot of tactics White is able to take over
and convert his development advantage into a material one.
A very interesting game is ahead of us...

This has been standing as a solid opening for at least
the last years!

Of course moves like .g or .Nc are more popular, but
.a also deserves a lot of attention, especially since in the
latest games White is scoring very well with it.

is probably the main move. The idea of ... Ba is
simply that it is not that easy to defend the c pawn for White.
.Nbd would block the bishop on c and the queen on c
could not be in the best position.

Black lured the white queen to c -the mission is
done- so now it is time to place the bishop to b .

and that’s the key: if the white queen was placed
on d , White would have the great d move, but now .d is
connected to very complicated play because Black can just
take twice on d .

This is the last pretty idea! By pinning the white
king Black is threatening to play Rxh next again. The white
king can never go to the g-file because of Rg and White would
