Replacements from within the
ranks have had their share of
success. Bernard Sumner stepped
reluctantly into the void left by
Ian Curtis in Joy Division to steer
the rebranded New Order to even
greater success over the next four
decades. Phil Collins transformed
Genesis from proggers to pop rock
behemoths when Peter Gabriel
made a sharp exit.
But with the exception of
Midge Ure’s Ultravox takeover,
those ‘Situation Vacant’ ads have
rarely (if at all) borne fruit with
outsiders. When Queen faced
the almost impossible task of
replacing Freddie Mercury, even
the firepower of Paul Rodgers
was only a qualified success,
while the operatic shenanigans of
Adam Lambert seem like a pallid
facsimile. Similarly, INXS have
never really recovered from the
loss of Michael Hutchence.
Can you imagine anyone other
than Simon Le Bon singing with
Duran Duran? Who could deliver
Depeche Mode songs better than
Dave Gahan? Would another lead
singer be accepted into the ranks
of Culture Club if Boy George
departed from the group?
We’ll see in the coming months
how Spandau deal with a future
without Tony belting out their hits.
In the meantime, he’s pressing on
with his own Brave New World –
a reactivation of his songwriting
muse featuring some intriguing
collaborators as we discover in this
month’s cover feature interview.
The reasons for his departure
from Spandau may remain
shrouded in mystery and perhaps
for the [New] romantics among us
it’s better if the nitty gritty doesn’t
make it into the public domain.
Tony’s sending out a very clear
message to his former colleagues,
though – it’s your move, lads.
