On a social network he wrote what I believe to be a brilliant post that sums up
what we all think and have experienced.
I have been told: "stop it, you are forty adn you are still playing with toy sol-
diers"...
Well, maybe I should have answered: "look, let me explain, it all comes from
an idea, a spark. At first in the mind, then photos, anatomy books, uniform pla-
tes. From the head to the hands, some copper wire, a lump of putty and the mat-
ter is molded. What looks like a shapeless, senseless mass slowly takes shape.
yo fill, you add, you mill, you file, you remove. The idea takes an almost defi-
ned shape, it still isn't there, but it can be glimpsed. Details are added, an expe-
ression on the face, a crease in the cloth, a detail on the hand. There it is!
Yet there's still something not quite right. True, we have the shapes, the
muscles, the clothing. But there's still something missing. We must make it come
to LIFE!
Here come paint bushes and colors. What better way to breathe life into a
piece.
Once again poring over books, photo, plates. Slowly the color is applied. It
seems random at first, then gradually one can see that each colour goes into
the right place.
A highlight, a shadow, a retouch. The expression on the face is now almost
complete, the eye, the mouth. Then come the clothes ("garments" may not be
understood) with their bright or drab colors, stark contrasts or seamless sha-
dings.
That is when the original idea takes an interesting twist. Watching the half
painted piece and thinking of the research work required, history comes to
mind The historical context of the figure. This little soldier really did exist! This
realisation makes him "alive" and places him in his moment in history.
At times all it takes to trigger this crazy idea is a brush storke, a detail, an
extra higlight But it is my idea and it is hard to understand for the uninitiated.
How about the base? The base helps to make things more lively and involving
for the viewer. I think it helps to put the figure in context, to make it feel more
at home, if you will.
Here, this is how I wish I had answered the question.
Instead, I just said: Yes , I am still playing with toy soldiers at forty.
Thanks Roberto, the next time someone tells me I am still playing with toy sol-
diers, I'll know, you'll know, we'll all know what to say!
