POP. — 11,096,395 (1999 est.)
CAPITAL — Havana
Formerly a Spanish possession,
Cuba made several unsuccessful
attempts to gain her freedom, which
finally led to the intervention of the US
in 1898. In that year under the Treaty of
Paris, Spain relinquished the island to
the US in trust for its inhabitants.
In 1902 a republic was established
and the Cuban Congress took over the
government
from
the
military
authorities.

Catalogue values for unused
stamps in this country are for
Never Hinged items, beginning
with Scott 402 in the regular post-
age section, Scott B3 in the semi-
postal section, Scott C38 in the
airpost section, Scott CB1 in the
airpost semi-postal section, Scott
E13 in the special delivery section,
and Scott RA1 in the postal tax
section.
Pen cancellations are common on
the earlier stamps of Cuba. Stamps
so canceled sell for very much less
than
those
with
postmark
cancellations.

The differences between the stamps of
1882 and the various retouches are as follows:
Original state: The medallion is surrounded
by a heavy line of color of nearly even thick-
ness, touching the horizontal line below the
word “Cuba” (or “Filipinas,” “Puerto Rico,” as
the case may be); the opening in the hair
above the temple is narrow and pointed.
1st retouch: The line around the medallion is
thin, except at the upper right, and does not
touch the horizontal line above it; the opening
in the hair is slightly wider and a trifle rounded;
the lock of hair above the forehead is shaped
like a broad “V” and ends in a point; there is a
faint white line below it, which is not found on
the stamps in the original state. Owing to wear
of the plate the shape of the lock of hair and
the width of the white line below it vary.
2nd retouch: The opening in the hair forms a
semi-circle; the lock above the forehead is
Nos. 156-160 were issued for use on
newspapers.
Nos. 156-175 exist imperf. Value, unused
pairs, $1,500.
