Why a new edition of Bookworms?
Bookworms graded readers began in 1988, and
with the publication of the new edition in 2008,
the Oxford Bookworms Library celebrates its
twentieth anniversary.
Why a new edition? The core of Bookworms
is the fiction library, more than 190 stories, and
good stories do not die. They do not change
with pedagogical fashion. They keep their
power to hold a reader’s attention, to delight, to
engage, to intrigue, to entertain. But the world
of extensive reading has changed . . .

What’s changed in extensive reading?
In the last ten years, interest in extensive reading
(ER) as a pedagogical activity has increased
greatly. More and more teachers and learners
understand the valuable role that graded reading
materials can play in language learning. Here
are just a few signs of the new ER times:
• There are now websites and online discussion
groups for extensive reading, with teachers all
over the world sharing and exchanging ideas.
Try searching online for “extensive reading”
and see what comes up.
• There is the Extensive Reading Foundation
<www.erfoundation.org>, ‘a not-for-profit,
charitable organization whose purpose is to
support and promote extensive reading’.
• There are now awards for the best graded
readers each year – the Language Learner
Literature Awards given by the ERF. Since
2004, when the awards began, Bookworms
have had 3 award winners and 10 finalists.

The new edition brings all the elements of
Bookworms together in one home – the Fiction
Library, Starters, Factfiles, and Playscripts.

• There are
additional resource materials.
There are over 200 books in the Library, with
new titles being added every year, and more than
140 titles with audio recordings (with American
