I would like to describe quite new type of bridges. They are called Extradosed Bridges with a case of study Kwidzyn bridge in Poland. The extradosed bridge looks like a connection suspension bridge and cable-stayed bridge. The history of the extradosed bridge started in 1976.When the first type of extradosed construction was built in Switzerland, they constructed the Ganter Bridge:

Case of study:

Kwidzyn extradosed bridge in Poland is the one of the largest in the world. Total length of the bridge is 808,5m with the main span of 204m.Kwidzyn Bridge crosses The Vistula River.

The first thing we notice looking at the Kwidzyn Bridge is that there are no tall towers. It is like 1/3 tall of suspension bridge tower. These proportions allowed the engineers to make smaller angles than in cable stayed or suspension bridges.

In addition, the cables are much shorter and less susceptible to the effects of fatigue limit.  We can see in the photo below. http://www.nbi.com.pl/assets/Galerie/2013/kwidzyn2/kwidzyn_9.jpg

Extradosed construction can be constructing on two types:

-         By Mathivata method – This solution is closer beam construction. Where the towers acts as deviator and allows the derivation of compression beyond the outline of the section.

-         By Menna method – This solution is closer suspension construction. Where the cables are attached to the towers and it is constructed as the maximum limp.

The Kwidzyn bridge was built by connecting both methods. The deck is connected by 6 pylons and is 15.9 m wide and has a constant depth of 3.50m also it is designed as a post-tensioned concrete box with full depth ribs at the location of the extrados cables. The awesome fact is that to make the deck engineers used the concrete class B 80 and the entire superstructure of the bridge was made of this material. It was the first time when the concrete class B80 was used in Poland. Only piers are structured from B40. The proposed system for deck , called “Movable Scaffolding System” was used. This system was first designing by  Norwegian Company STRUKTURAS .The movable scaffolding system is quite easy solution. The main part is MMS :

MMS is the machine which creates something like form and after when one element between the spans is ready. The main part of the bridge (over the riverbed) was constructed section-by-section using underslung movable scaffolding system. The superstructure was divided into 12 sections, each 50 m long . For this purpose it was necessary to build 13 temporary concrete supports, six of which were located in the river current. The scaffolding consisted of two box girders supporting the formwork. Each section was erected in stages

The Stay cable installation started immediately after concreting of the deck anchor zones. The system called VSL SSI6-75 has been used for the project

Stays were installed and stressed using the computerised VSL Automatic Monostrand Stressing (AMS) system to ensure equalisation of forces in the strands and to speed up stressing time. One cable is 75 metal tie rods. The cables are mounted alternately. The stressing was carried out using computer controlled automatic stressing system that took account of the structure’s characteristics to ensure stress uniformity after the last strand was installed. One Pylon has 18 cables . What gave us 54 cables for the whole bridge.

If we are looking at the design and the safety value, The cables are red which makes the bridge really visible.

Extradosed Bridges are definitely curious when we are looking at the construction point of view. One of advantages for this type of bridge is that they are cheaper. Pylons are shorter than in cable stayed bridges so the cost is lower.

Finally I would like to say more about foundation, columns and the methods used.

The foundations were made by Cofferdam method.

Supports height were varied from 4.5 m to over 12 m. The width of the support also was variable and ranged from 1.8 m to 2.8 m. As shown in (Boarding Flyover), the supports are V-shaped. Imaginative and skilled PERI employees, as well as their extensive experience found a solution, which initially seemed impossible. Probably there is no system on the market that better than TRIO checked by construction of large surface vertical. Thanks to the large size of plates (max. 2.40 m x 3.30 m), it was possible to quickly assemble and disassemble the significant dimensional surface. Relatively a small amount of hardware (locks BFD officiating function both fasteners and alignment means and simultaneously sealing and bolts TAR85, allowing vertical stiffening contacts formwork panels when moving the whole Crane walls) makes this solution very effective. The following pictures show details solutions used during construction

Personal reflective conclusion- I think that thanks to PDP lessons I was able to understand which skills I have to improve. I know now that I should focus my attention on improving my English writing skills. The lessons highlighted the fact that my CV is not as good as I thought . Definitely PDP helped me with my presentation skills.
