Chapter One
How does that statement go…never say never? Rico was now living it as he found himself
approaching the feline coalition that was run by some Jaguar named Mitchell.
If the situation hadn’t been so appalling, Rico might have laughed. The guy who had
sworn he would never settle down and join a coalition. Now he was about to go and do
that very thing, by asking them if they would take him on as an assassin.
But after so many years of working freelance, Rico had pissed off too many people. As
such, he had a lot of people that wanted a piece of his ass. So he needed the safety and
support a coalition could offer. Which meant he was going to have to play nice with
others…damn it! He hated when he had to do that. It almost made him seem civilized.
Perish the thought.
Rico had to admit he wasn’t too impressed with the outside of the coalition’s compound.
It was nothing more than an abandoned auto factory—one that looked like it had seen
better days. There were rust spots in many places on the exterior. Some of the windows
were broken and missing. Plus, the place just screamed for a fresh paint job. Hell, screw
that, it screeched for a wrecking ball.
Rico was surprised. He had done a background check on the coalition before deciding
to approach it. Rico had discovered they were one of the wealthiest ones around. So they
shouldn’t be living in a shithole.
Shaking his head in confusion, Rico approached the guard shack. He was immediately
challenged by two guards. One was a Lion shifter, the other a Jaguar.
“What business do you have here?” the Lion asked.
It was all Rico could do not to crack up at the guy’s stuffy language. He sounded like
he’d been to one too many Renaissance festivals. Either that or he’d been watching way
too many episodes of Game of Thrones. Whatever the reason, he really needed to learn to
loosen up a bit.
“I’m here about the assassin job,” Rico answered, although he thought it was pretty
damn obvious, given what he was wearing. Like all assassins, he wore the padded black
shirt and pants with a matching hooded cloak. He might as well have a neon sign over his
head that screamed Assassin Here!
“Fine, wait here while we call out Shane to meet you,” the Jaguar said.
Rico held in a sigh of irritation. Of course! He had to pass muster with the big, bad,
mighty Shane. After all, it wouldn’t do if the most perfect assassin in the world didn’t
approve of him. The whole world might end.
Thankfully, Mr. Perfect didn’t keep him waiting for long. Shane came out to the guard
shack. Rico had met Shane a time or two, but he was still surprised at how sweet and
almost angelic Shane appeared. With his big doe eyes and brown hair, he looked so young
and innocent. But Rico knew better. Shane was his own WMD. While Rico might find the
