Welcome
This issue I learned of both some
surprising, and also some very sad news.
If you have been collecting toy soldiers
for a few years, and by a few I mean 10, if
not 15 plus, then there is a name that you
will know fairly well - Trophy Miniatures.
Trophy, in its heyday of the mid to late
80s, was ‘the’ name in toy soldiers.
At this time, Britains was producing
volume, but primarily still aiming at
the tourist/toy markets and was only
beginning to discover the power of the
collector pound (or dollar) whilst the
likes of King and Country and Frontline
Figures were just beginning to hit their
stride. The driving force, true character
and real gentleman behind Trophy was
Len Taylor, a man who welcomed me
into the hobby as a green 21-year-old
with little military history or toy soldier
knowledge. I was personally shocked
to learn of Len’s sad passing recently
through other friends in the hobby. Len
was 86 when he died on February 26th
and I am told he passed peacefully after
being admitted to hospital around a
week earlier. I am sure all of you that
knew Len like I did will miss him and we
wish his family and close friends all the
best at this time. Suffice to say, we will be
doing a retrospective feature on Len’s
life and work in next issue given what he
meant to the toy soldier hobby.
The other news which reached me this
issue was the sale of W. Britain. As most
of you know, Britains was sold by former
owner, Racing Champions, to First Gear
back in 2005. After just over 10 years
of ownership, it seems First Gear has
decided to sell up and now there are
new owners at the helm. You can read
the full story on the sale with the official
‘press release’ which is published over
the page in the news section. It certainly
sounds like the new owners know what
they are doing though, so good luck to
them as I for one will be watching how
the brand develops with keen interest.

W. Britain
changes hands!
After just over 10 years of ownership, First Gear Inc. of Peosta,
Iowa has sold the W. Britain to new owners, The Good Soldier
L.L.C. of Holland, Ohio. This came as quite a shock to me person-
ally as I’d not heard any news around the brand possibly being
up for sale and learned of the change of ownership from Ken
Osen, W. Britain’s General Manager and Creative Director who is
now one of the shareholders in the new parent company.
Ken got in touch and let me have the ‘official’ press release
which read as follows:
The Good Soldier L.L.C is owned by a small group of investors
including John Lord Booth II, Scott & Holly Walter, Dave Young-
quist and Kenneth & Ericka Osen. Each of the owners shares a
lifelong passion for both history and miniatures and have made
a commitment to continue growing the W. Britain brand and W.
Britain Collector’s Club with a refocused energy and many new
product offerings.
The former General Manager & Creative Director of William
Britain under First Gear Inc., Kenneth Osen, remains in that posi-
tion as one of the new owners. Ericka Osen of Hudson & Allen
Studio heads up Customer Service and Ted Deddens of Tedtoy
Miniatures is the new Manager of Operations.
Kenneth Osen and Alan Ball have been part of the W. Britain
team as master sculptors since 2005 so continuity of important
ranges and quality is insured. The entire creative team of tal-
ented sculptors, painters and researchers working with the brand
also remains completely intact.
Hudson & Allen Studio’s range of high quality scenic acces-
sories and buildings established in 1991 and owned by Ken and
Ericka Osen have also become a Good Soldier L.L.C. brand.
We are also very pleased to announce that our relationship
with Bachmann Europe Plc. will continue for service in the UK,
Ireland and Continental Europe. We continue to work closely
with Katie Hines, the Brand Manager for W. Britain at Bachmann
Europe and the UK branch of the W. Britain Collector’s Club.
By March 1st, 2016, the entire operation will be moved to our
new facility in Ohio and new orders will be fulfilled and shipped
starting on March 7th. The website is being updated and will be
fully operational as a separate site very soon. Look for new prod-
ucts and services being added to our website during 2016.

the transition is appreciated.

More boy scouts
I dropped by the tables of
my good friend Tony Burley
at the December show and
was pleased to see he had
some new items available,
and not just scouting-related
ones either! Of course, Tony
is best known for his scout-
ing themed figures and sets,
and two of his new releases
are clearly focused in that
area,. There is a lovely little
new campfire scene with two
scouts enjoying a mug of tea
whilst cooking their ‘grub’. Pos-
sibly, that grub is a fish caught
by their friend who has his
trusty fishing rod in hand.
Both these little sets are well
made, great fun and could
find a home in most civilian
dioramas, I’m sure.
The other set Tony had
on offer is a pair of boxers in
very traditional poses (I can’t
imagine many modern box-
ers trying to adopt this pose in
the ring!) with really good high
gloss paintwork. It's a little
unusual but again, a great set
which could come in handy
in either a civilian or military
(behind the lines) scene. For

Expeditionary Force
EF have the first of their Zulu War cavalry sculpts now up on
their website. The sculpting looks good with the plug-in parts
and separate saddle. Making the horse a generic one that
may be used for other sets is a good idea and should save
some money in the long term. I would presume that other
right arms will be available to change the pose as is common
with this maker. The first of the Zulu War range should be

Armies In Plastic
AIP have had a sale but it may be over by the time this
reaches you. However, worth mentioning are new special
sets with 10 mounted, made up of Officer, Bugler and eight
Troopers/Lancers. This will be a real boon to those doing
wargame units by providing a higher proportion of ORs to
officers and musicians. It will save having to convert some of
the figures for those of you who don’t enjoy that side of the
hobby as much as I do! There are also 21 New Special Sets
right across all the periods, with various ‘Army’ combinations,
for example, Item #5709 Legation Defense, China 1900 – eight
Japanese Infantry, 16 British Sailors, 10 Russian Infantry plus
one Gatling Gun and one Screw Gun (no crews). https://www.

MARS should have released their three sets, as photos are
now on the distributors site. These are Taliban 1979/89,
Russian fighters 1979/89, Vietcong. Also out by the time

was trying to release a second set of ACW for March. And

cember show, I visited John's (Gittins, owner of JG) tables where
he was proudly displaying the next two additions - the farmers
