he Beriev Be-6, NATO
code name Madge, was a
twin engine flying boat
designed and built by the
Soviet Beriev OKB that first flew
in 1949. The Be-6 featured a
distinctive gull wing design and
was capable of performing
long range maritime missions
including coastal and supply
patrols, reconnaissance, mine
laying and torpedo/bombing
runs. The aircraft was powered
by two Shvestov ASH-73TK
radial engines and had a range
of 3,100 miles.
The BE-6 could be armed
with five 23mm Nudelman
Rhikter NR-23 cannon,
which were housed in
three remotely
controlled
turrets, two
2,205lb
torpedoes and/or eight mines,
all mounted below the wings.
The BE-6 had a crew of eight.
123 were built between 1949
and 1957 and it was eventually
retired in the late 1960s,
eventually being developed
into the Beriev Be-12. Its
primary users were the Soviet
Navy and the People’s Republic
of China People’s Liberation
Army Naval Air Force or
PLANAF.
The Trumpeter kit comes in a
nice lift off lid box, my favourite
type, containing six sprues of
grey and three of clear injection
moulded plastic, one decal
sheet, one instruction booklet
and one colour marking and
painting guide. The colour
references are for Mr Hobby,
Vallejo, Tamiya and Humbrol
paints. I will always use Mr
Hobby
aqueous paints where I can as I
find that they give superb
spraying results every time with
excellent colour depth and
density.
Although it seems that there
are very few sprues in the box
each is crammed with parts of a
very high quality.
The decal sheet gives two
options, one for each primary
operator and the instructions
are as always nicely laid out by
Trumpeter with colour call outs
for Mr Hobby paints at certain,
but not all, steps along the way.
although very little can be seen
once the fuselage and canopy
are glued together. No matter -
I know it is there. It takes seven
of the twenty three stages to
build the interior which shows
how much detail there is.
Stages eight to fourteen
concern the wings, engines and
tail planes. The wings and tail
planes have separate flaps,
ailerons and rudders, and
although they are not poseable
they could be repositioned
with slight modification.
There are a multitude of
small windows along each side
of the fuselage which as
anyone familiar with my
reviews will know by now will
not be used, as I am not a great
fan of masking all of the tiny
clear parts and will chicken out
in favour of
Micro

Construction
The build began by painting
and assembling the interior.
This area is comprehensively

with plenty of little parts
to be glued into

mini cutting mat in a number of useful instances

sprayed on nicely
and provided a
decals ready

Be-6 at Ukrainian State Aviation Museum in Kyiv. The Be-6 was built
from 1949 to 1957 at the Beriev plant in Taganrog. The aircraft went
through nineteen variants through its production cycle and 123
aircraft were eventually built (Dima Sergienko)

Be-6s operated by the People’s Republic of China PLANAF proved
useful in patrolling the long coastline and huge territorial waters off
China's coast. During the 1970s the original Shvetsov radial engines
began to wear out with no replacements available, so several
aircraft were re-engined with Wopen WJ-6 turboprop engines in
new nacelles, for a new lease of life and were redesignated Qing-6
The Beriev Be-12 was the successor to the Be-6 but inherited little
more than the gull wing and twin oval tailfin configuration of the
older aircraft. The Be-12 had turboprop engines which gave it an
improved speed and range over the Be-6. The Be-12 also had
retractable landing gear which enabled it to land on normal land
runways, as well as water
