Welcome back!
In the previous Inner Circle lessons, you

preparation in language learning. And you

This time, we’re going in the complete
opposite direction. We’re exploring one
undeniable fact of language learning that
you can use to your advantage:
You’re never fully prepared until you get
in the game and immerse yourself.
And this is something I experienced
first-hand during my trip to Italy this
month.
Most learners fail at languages because of
this fact. They prepare, study, take lessons
and study some more. Then, when they’re
faced with the language in real life, they
realize it’s spoken a lot faster, there’s a ton
of words they’ve never encountered...and
they’re simply unprepared.
You’re never fully
prepared until you get

So, let me give you a rundown
of my family trip to Italy
AND EXPLAIN HOW THE FIRST POINT CAME UP....

Why You’re Never Fully Prepared Until You Get
Into The Game And Immerse Yourself
Prior to the trip, I prepared with my
Skype tutor, my in-person tutor and
used ItalianPod101 and Custom Lists.
I made sure I knew the necessary Italian
Survival Phrases. In short, like any other
language learner visiting a certain
country, I was on a study spree.
...And it all helped at some point.
However, once my family and I landed
at Cagliari Airport in Sardinia, Italy,
I realized that despite my preparations,
there were things I simply could not
anticipate and prepare for until
I was there.
The Italians there spoke faster than
my Italian tutors. There were lots of
people, lots of speaking styles, lots of
opinions, lots of words I’ve never heard
before...and they were all coming at me
with rapid-fire speed. And they all
confused me very rapidly too!
The first half of the vacation took place
in Sardinia, an island o the west coast
of Italy. Not exactly a tourist hot-spot
like Venice or Rome. Not a lot of
English. And not many tourist-friendly
stores. We did a house-swap at
HomeExchange.com and traded homes
with an Italian family.
The goal was to live like locals for the
first half in Sardinia, and then enjoy the
touristy Rome, Venice and Florence for
the second half the trip.
Sardinia, being o the beaten tourist
path, was the perfect example of why
you’ll never be totally prepared.
In the town I stayed in, there weren’t
any modern supermarkets. Just small
mom and pop shops, bakeries, butchers
and vegetable stores.
For example, when you’re buying bread
at a bakery, you’re dealing with an older
shopkeeper who has a completely
di erent speaking style than standard
Italian. Then, the buying process was
di erent! You have to order by grams!
You need to know the weight! It was
similar to buying meat at the butcher
shop. At the bakery they would cut the
bread, weigh it and bag it for you. I
know the word for “bread” and how to
buy things in general. You walk in, take
what you want, pay and leave. This, I
had no clue about.
