Royal Mail’s Star Wars stamp set is Britain’s biggest yet – in terms of the number of stamps – and
has proved to be hugely popular with many collectors and fans of the films. The issue has grabbed
the headlines and put stamps in the limelight, but some collectors have expressed their concerns at the
number of stamps and the chosen subject. You can read our Star Wars debate on our website (just visit:
http://stamp.cm/sw-debate) and I’d love to hear your views on the stamps.
For me, the stamps give us the chance to share our hobby with thousands of ‘non-collectors’, we
can use the set to grab the attention of young collectors and show them that stamps can cover
all kinds of subjects, that they can be exciting, contemporary and accessible. Yes, we want younger generations to
embrace the more academic aspects of our hobby, but forming a collection of science fiction stamps could lead to a
lifelong interest in stamp collecting.
With that thought in mind, we cover the subject of science fiction stamps on page 69 and provide a guide to Star
Wars stamps and coins on page 72, while we also bring you the usual mix of articles covering many different aspects of
stamps, coins and postal history. As ever, the contents reflect the diverse nature of our hobby. Whether it’s characters
from a galaxy far, far away, or events on our own planet, our hobbies provide something for everyone!

MEET THE EXPERTS…
Professional writer Chris West has written about subjects
including crime fiction, history, and how to start a
business. He has written two books on stamps, including
First Class: A History of Britain in 36 Postage Stamps,
and
details Canada’s 1898 Christmas stamp on page 55.
David Bailey has been trading in Portobello Market, on
and off, since 1995. These days he trades from a street
stall on sunny Fridays and on Delcampe. David shares his
thoughts on definitive stamps on page 25 and continues
his study of Italian States stamps on page 48.
Michael Adkins collects stamps and banknotes from countries,
colonies or occupational forces which no longer exist. He
manages the website DCStamps.com and writes our regular
‘dead countries’ series which, this month, focuses on the
Lithuanian Occupation of Klaipeda (page 52).
