Welcome
t’s always a pleasure at this time of year to reveal the winners of the Rhinegold/ABO
awards, though it’s hard to believe we’ve got to the h ones already. It really doesn’t feel
that long ago that we rst started discussions with the ABO team about piggy-backing
on their existing award (which celebrates a lifetime of contribution to the orchestral sector),
with three more speci c ones which would recognise achievements in the previous year in
the elds of orchestra, venue and artist management.
ere were many strong nominations again this time, much lively discussion from the
judging panel, but in the end a unanimous agreement on the NYO’s Sarah Alexander,
Sa ron Hall’s Angela Dixon and YCAT’s Alasdair Tait. See our news story on page 7, but
also the next few issues where we’ll be featuring a full report from the ABO conference itself,
as well as an interview with each of the winners in turn.
Meanwhile, as we send the magazine to the printers, news is ltering out of negotiations at
ENO regarding its chorus’s contract, with impressions pointing very much in the direction
of it no longer being full time. At this point, both ENO and MU spokespeople say that dis-
cussions are ongoing and there is no announcement to make – however there is an unmistak-
able prepare-for-bad-news whi in the company’s statement: ‘We have to be able to operate
with signi cantly reduced funding. As a consequence, we need to look at developing a more
exible way of working while maintaining our artistic integrity.’
e issue of full-time contacts has naturally been seen as a line in the sand – not least by
the company’s music director Mark Wigglesworth, who has put himself on the record more
than once saying that a part-time ENO is inconceivable. It’s not even clear who to be upset
with: the management only has the hand dealt by the Arts Council to work with; the Arts
Council itself is dealing with reduced DCMS funding; DCMS no doubt glowers in the
direction of the treasury; which in turn can only nod towards the global economy and shrug.
