A LAYERED
APPROACH TO
GARDENING
AS A GARDENER IN THE 21ST CENTURY, I STRIVE TO DO THE RIGHT THING—plant
for
pollinators, grow a few vegetables, feed perennials and woody plants organically (okay, I
admit to using synthetic fertilizers in containers), but I realized how much more I could do
after I heard Claudia West, co-author of
Planting in a Post-Wild World: Designing Plant
Communities for Resilient Landscapes,
at AmericanHort’s Cultivate’16. Her book has been
reviewed, talked about and generally praised by many, and I felt fortunate to experience
her passion and practical approach first-hand.
We can’t restore the wilderness, West
says, but we can still garden with a purpose:
to increase biodiversity and attract a larger
cross-section of birds, pollinators, insects
and other wildlife. “The more diverse your
landscape, the more beneficial it is to the
environment,” she says.
West’s approach isn’t ecological restora-
tion, but rather a hybrid of horticulture and
ecology. Although a strong proponent of
native plants, she doesn’t define ecological
as “only natives”; she urges using resilient
plants adapted to the habitat in which we
garden.
Best of all, her approach offers a way to
garden ecologically in traditional garden
settings by observing the density and
diversity of a weed patch thriving along a
road or the majesty of a sweeping meadow,
and substituting plants that may be more
appropriate to our urban or suburban
setting, layering them in a way that mimics
nature.
Her three-layered approach starts by
covering the soil in planting areas with
“ground-hugging” plants (not necessarily
traditional groundcovers, and certainly not
invasive groundcovers). This lower layer
nestles at the feet of taller specimens in the
second layer, the perennials and grasses
that wax and wane over the seasons. The
ground huggers provide a green, living
mulch to moderate soil temperature,
prevent erosion and preserve moisture,
and also help support the taller plants by
cozying up against their base. Trees and
shrubs provide the permanent third layer.
“Plants are like people,” West says. “They
don’t like living in solitary confinement—
grow them in communities.” I like that
metaphor, and I like the idea of more plants.
I also like the idea of a living, permanent
mulch, and not needing to haul bags of
shredded bark to cover bare soil around
plants growing in isolation. Our garden
next year is going to get a whole lot cozier.
