fter an absence from the bike — and
the loss of fitness that goes with it — I
was mostly riding solo. Mainly because
I didn’t want to hold my friends back
while I struggled up the hills, though they said
they didn’t mind. Then I discovered another friend
was in the same boat, purely by chance when she
“stole” my Strava QOM and we started exchanging
text messages to joke about it. We were the only
two women to have ridden that segment.
Last weekend we finally went on a ride
together and discovered that we were riding at
exactly the same speed and energy level. It was a
ride that we had delayed for a long time because we
thought we’d hold the other person back. While we
were pedalling, we also discovered that we both see
riding uphill as a necessary evil to get to the fun
downhill trails, and we had similar riding styles.
A totally random ride that turned out to be
exactly what we needed. Though the ride also
turned out to be much longer than we had planned
when we decided to explore some of the newer
trails in our local network. While we had planned
on riding for an hour, we ended up riding a total of
three hours. And neither of us minded, aside from
the hunger that started to set in near the end. After
all, it was a pre-dinner ride!
But now I’m left wondering, how many other
rides had I put off that would’ve been just what I
needed?

Bike Coach, Internationally Certified
Personal Trainer, and owner of Ozmosis
Training. She is passionate about
helping other people realize and
achieve their goals. She holds skills
clinics, teaches bike maintenance,
and is involved in trail building and
maintenance in the Lower Mainland of
Britsh Columbia.
Cécile is a freelance action and portrait
photographer living in North Vancouver,
BC. Honing her skills from riding all
sorts of bikes, her photographs are a
fusion of Fine Art and Action to create
vivid, exciting and engaging images. Her
work has been featured in exhibitions,
and has been published in national

Kristen Gross is a Canuck in Cali—she
arrived in 2013 to the land of “always
summer”. Before becoming a first-
time mom in 2016, she raced XC in the
pro category with career highlights
including a fifth place finish in the BC
Bike Race. Kristen is also a mountain
bike skills instructor, sales rep for Rocky
Mountain Bicycles, and runs her own
freelance writing/communications
business.
Michelle is a cycling obsessed resident
of Southern California. She loves being
outside, training, and exploring new
trails. Michelle has been racing cross-
country mountain bikes off and on, and
five years ago she took up cyclocross
as well.
Amber is the founder of Ride Like
a Girl, a mentorship and bursary
program designed to support young
female mountain bike athletes. She is
also a former pro-elite DH mountain
bike racer who raced nationally and
at World Cup events. Amber is now a
community planner who is passionate
about environmental sustainability.
She is also a motivational speaker with
the National Esteem Team.
