Hadrian’s Wall Country
Britain’s greatest Roman monument, Hadrian’s Wall, was
built on orders of the Emperor, to define and control the
empire’s northern edge - an empire that stretched across
Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa. Evidence
suggests Hadrian inspected work on the Wall in AD122.
For almost 2,000 years, the Wall has stood as a symbol
of power and might. Today Hadrian’s Wall is part of the
UNESCO World Heritage Site Frontiers of the Roman
Empire, one of the largest in the world.
Were you coming from the north 2,000 years ago, you
would have received a rather cool reception. Safe to say
your welcome will be a lot warmer and friendlier nowadays.
For 80 miles, Hadrian’s Wall stretches across northern
England, from coast to coast, crossing dramatic countryside
and cosmopolitan cities alike. Along its course you will find
a wealth of Roman heritage, to explore and enjoy, in a
variety of dynamic ways. Modern museums and galleries tell
stories through state of the art interpretation and displays,
archaeology in action with live digs and excavations, full
scale reconstructions and re-enactments bringing the
Roman frontier to life, and of course Roman remains, from
parts of the Wall itself to precious treasures found in the
World Heritage Site.
Hadrian’s Wall Country has more: spectacular coastlines,
breathtaking countryside, picturesque villages, short ambles
or epic treks, easy bike rides or challenging cycles, things
to see and do whatever the weather, and lovely places to
stay, which when combined with the unique history and
heritage, make for a super holiday.
This guide will provide you with an introduction to Hadrian’s

Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum
Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum
Overlooking the River Tyne at South Shields, Arbeia Roman Fort is
an important part in the Hadrian’s Wall story. Built around AD160,
Arbeia was an active garrison that guarded the shipping routes to
Hadrian’s Wall and became the military supply base for its 17 Forts.
The museum, which celebrated its 60th year in 2013, houses some
of the remains that have been found since excavations began in
the late 1800’s. There are impressive full-scale reconstructions at
Arbeia, including the West Gate, the Commanding Officer’s house
and a barrack block. These reconstructions show the scale of Roman
military architecture and highlight the very different living conditions
of all ranks. Arbeia has one of the finest collections of finds from
Roman Britain, and more objects are being uncovered each year, as
archaeologists continue to excavate this fascinating site.

Segedunum – meaning ‘Strong Fort’ - was built to guard the eastern
end of Hadrian’s Wall, and once housed 600 Roman soldiers. It stood
for almost 300 years as a symbol of Roman rule and a bastion against
barbarian attack.
Now, Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum at Wallsend is the
most excavated fort along Hadrian’s Wall, where visitors can see
foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself. Highlights
of the museum include the only reconstructed Roman Bath House
in the UK and a 35 metre high viewing tower providing outstanding
views across this World Heritage Site.
