the trash-can wasn't such a big deal —
the machine was practically a toy. But
as computers g e t m o r e powe rful,
people will refuse to dispose of them
and buy a whole new system so easily.
all this? At the Atari press conference,
somebody asked Tramiel what h e
thought o f Co mmo d o re' s n e w
machines and he said, "I didn't see any
new machines!" What a comedian!
Jack put on quite a show of his own.
The guy bought Atari just six months
ago, and he's already got a truckload
of products to show off. The most ex-
citing was his 130ST and 520ST com-
puters, w h i ch w e re immediately
dubbed "Jackintosh." That's right.
Jack must have sat down with his en-
gineers and said, " I want a Macintosh
and! want it cheap," because that's ex-
actly what they gave him. The screen
features movable windows, icons, pull
down menus, and you control them all
with th e mouse. I f tha t don't re a d
Macintosh, I don't know what does. I t
even has a built in Breakout game.
More importantly, th e thi ng i s i n
colour (Ma c is black and white) and
the price is supposed to be between
$400 a nd $600. I 'v e been saying a l l
along that if somebody could come out
with a Macintosh for less than $1,000,
they'd sell millions of them. Now they
have, Atari's only problem is that the
ST line isn't compatible with anything
in the known world, so there's no soft-
