Materials
Project Note:
Fabric scraps would work
anywhere the yardage is listed at a
1⁄8
yard, but if
you go to a fabric shop, you’ll need to purchase
1⁄8-yard
pieces.
• Fabric:
1/4 yard medium–blue print (background
behind appliqués and loops on
watermelon patch)
1/8 yard dark blue stripe (base background in
watermelon patch)
1/8 yard each green, off-white and red print
(watermelon)
1/8 yard multicolored stripe (flip-flops)
1/8 yard light red (flip-flop straps)
1/4 yard navy blue print (binding for both
patches and loops for flip-flop patch)
1/2
yard navy blue solid (pillow cover)
1/4 yard backing (both patches)
• 1/4 yard batting
• 1 package medium-size red rickrack
• 12-inch pillow form or pre-covered
decorative pillow
• 1/2 yard fusible appliqué film
• 8 large white buttons
• Sewing machine
• Sewing thread: red, navy, coordinating
variegated
Flip-Flop Patch
1)
Cut an 81/2-inch square from medium
blue background fabric. Position red
rickrack approximately 1 inch in from
raw edge. Pin in place to hold, and with
red thread, stitch a single straight stitch
down the center of the rickrack. Apply
second strip of rickrack in the same
manner, positioning it 1 inch away
from the raw edge, and overlapping first
rickrack strip on left side as shown.
2)
Trace two flip-flops on multicolored
strips and two straps on light red,
making sure to reverse one of each.
Prepare pieces for fusible appliqué
following the manufacturer’s

instructions. Referring to photo, fuse the
appliqué shapes in place.
3)
Layer the backing (wrong side up),
batting and quilt patch (right side up).
Using sewing machine and coordinating
variegated thread throughout, blanket-
stitch around appliqué shapes.
Randomly stitch over background.
Option:
Quilt patch by hand.
Loops & Binding
Watermelon Patch
1)
From medium blue background fabric,
cut a rectangle 81/2 x 61/2 inches. From dark
blue stripe fabric, cut a rectangle 81/2 x 21/2
inches, stitch together and press.
2)
Trace watermelon pattern on fusible
appliqué film. Referring to photo, fuse
watermelon: Begin with the green
rind, then add the off-white portion,
and finally the red portion of the
watermelon. Follow instructions in step
3 to quilt patch.
1)
The binding and loop instructions
are the same for both pillow patches.
To make the button loops, cut one strip
of fabric at least 13/4 inches x 16 inches.
With right sides together, fold the strip
in half lengthwise and stitch along the
long raw edge, forming a tube. Turn
right side out. Press and cut this tube
into four 4-inch-long pieces.
2)
Position the loops on the back side
of the patch approximately 1 inch from
each side. Bind the patch, tucking the
ends of the loops into the binding. The
binding is made from 11/2-inch-wide
strips of navy blue print.
Pillow Cover
1)
Note:
Skip to step 5 if you are using a pre-
covered decorative pillow.
From navy blue
solid, cut three 14-inch squares. Turn under
1/2 inch on one edge of one squares. Turn
down an additional 2 inches and stitch.
2)
Fold one of the squares in half and
press. Layer the squares as follows:the
unfolded square right side up; the
square that has been folded in half, with
raw edges even;the square that has been
turned back 21/2 inches, right side down
with raw edges even on opposite side of
unfolded square.
3)
Stitch all the way around the fabric
square using navy thread and a 1/4-inch
seam allowance. Turn cover right side
out. Press well and insert the pillow form.
4)
Center patches on opposite sides of
covered pillow. Mark the spots for the
buttons. Stitch buttons on.
Note:
It might
be easier if you remove the pillow form for
this.
Reinsert the pillow form and slip
loops on the patches over buttons.
5)
If using a decorative pillow, simply
stitch buttons on and slip loops on the
patches over buttons.

to make sure your print settings are
set to print at 100 percent and page
scaling displays “None”.
