GAINING GROUND
e’ve got
a new
series
starting this
month all about
pest control.
Andrew Walker,
based up in
County Durham,
is a pest controller, but also loves his
gameshooting. He’s written about
how to dispose of the grey tree rats by
trapping and shooting, and I hope his
tips will come in useful. Coincidentally,
Jon Snowdon also mentions squirrels
in his
Northern Notes
this month, and
how red squirrels are slowly gaining
ground in his neck of the woods.

It’s one of the things that we, as shooters,
can really help with, and show how useful
we can be in conservation. The loss of red
squirrels is tragic and there will be readers
of this magazine who have never seen one.
Its just one of the species you can
help with effective pest control. It’s true
that for much of England, the chances
of red squirrels making a comeback
is slim, but culling grey squirrels is
important for other wildlife too. Not
only do they cause damage to trees, but
songbirds, whose nests they pillage for
eggs and chicks, are also targeted.
Speaking of songbirds, I’d like to remind
everyone that the 2016 Big Farmland
Bird Count takes place from 6 to 14
February. Last year, nearly 1,000 farmers

managing around 1million acres took
part in this great event. The GWCT, which
runs the week, also organises Farmland
Bird ID days - and as we went to press,
most of those were sold out. Let’s hope
that means we’ll see even more taking
part in this important event that helps
to establish our bird populations.

and you’ll find easy instructions
and useful identification aids.
At the time of writing, we’re drawing
to the end of the season, and I’ve got
just one day left. I’ve been lucky enough
to be asked to join Nick Ridley right
at the end of January, and I’m looking
forward to seeing his dogs in action. It
should be a great send off to the season.
