Downtime action: Recruit Follower
While the best source of followers are
those you encounter in the course of your
adventures and develop a rapport with,
sometimes a specific type of follower you
haven’t encountered by chance is desired for a
particular reason. Perhaps you need an
assistant or feel it is time to take on an
apprentice or squire, but have not encountered
an individual who fits your requirements.
Instead of relying on the individuals you meet
by chance, you can spend downtime seeking
out someone who meets your requirements.
You may freely determine the type of
follower which you wish to recruit, down to assigning attributes, background, class, level, and
other features as desired. However, the more skilled and talented the desired follower the longer
they will take to find and recruit. These outstanding individuals are simply fewer in number and
are more likely to have their own successful careers. Another consideration which modifies the
time required to find a desired follower is your lifestyle during the search. Those with higher
class lifestyles have more free time to devote to the search and can rely on other sets of eyes to
bring them information about prospective candidates. Further, at higher levels of lifestyle your
obvious success attracts more candidates and you have more flexibility in tailoring your
recruitment to a prospective follower's interests.
The first step in recruiting a follower during downtime is to determine the base attributes
desired for the follower. You then calculate their point value as for a PC. This is the base number
of days of searching that will be required to attract this individual as a level 1 follower. The
attribute limit is identical to that of a PC. While this means you may spend no more than 27
points on attributes, you do not need to spend that many points.

Once you have spent the required number of days on this
activity you successfully find your desired follower and recruit them
to your service or the service of your cause. New followers gained in
this manner are loyal to the individual who recruited them, or the
cause they were recruited for, not necessarily the party. They will travel with the character who
recruited them, adventuring and fighting alongside the party, or they may be sent to perform
other activities at the character's behest. However, such NPCs have their own desires and goals
and will leave or betray the character if mistreated or if the goals they joined the
character are not being advanced to their satisfaction. If you are using the loyalty
system the NPC has an initial loyalty of 10 and their maximum loyalty is determined
by the Charisma of the individual who recruited them, not the entire party.
Multiple characters can combine their efforts towards the recruitment of a
follower. The maximum level of the follower is determined by the lowest of the
character's participating and the maximum loyalty is determined by the highest
Charisma of the participants. Each character contributes downtime progress based on
their own lifestyle level.
If the recruit adventures with you, as with any NPC joining a party, a these
individuals receive an equal share of experience for encounters they participate in.
Their portion of treasure is determined by their relationship with their sponsor.
While this is the typical use for such recruits, they can also be assigned to other
tasks, if they have the appropriate skills and abilities. Common tasks include
managing a business, crafting items, or performing research. Costs involved in these
tasks fall on the sponsor, but the attention of a skilled and loyal follower can allow
projects to continue even in the character’s absence.
Followers differ from hirelings in that they do not require daily wages.
However, depending on their arrangements, they still require some level of support.
For adventuring followers in the wilds, this is often provided through shared meals.
In civilization, however, funds are required to support followers. Sponsors
adventuring with apprentices generally cover followers’ costs from their own funds.
Others negotiate a portion the treasure generated from adventuring. Those who
assign followers to remote assignments often allow their follower the freedom to
pursue activities to support themselves. However, restricting a follower’s activities
without providing support will deteriorate the follower’s loyalty until they leave to
support themselves or betray their former leader.
