INTRODUCTION
BEING FREUD
is a card game for 3-5 players where you attempt to interpret the dreams of your patients.
SET-UP
Every player is given their own deck of
ANALYSIS CARDS,
each containing eight cards.
Everyone then draws five cards from the
DREAM DECK.
Keep these cards hidden from the other
players.
The person who woke up last today goes first.
THE CARDS
There are two types of cards:
ANALYSIS CARDS: Every player gets eight, each one containing one of the following emotions:
TRUST, FEAR, SURPRISE, SADNESS, DISGUST, ANGER, ANTICIPATION,
and
JOY.
DREAM CARDS: Each Dream Card contains a word or phrase to be used in your description of your
dream. Each one also contains two emotions, listed on the bottom of the card.
PLAY
When it’s your turn, do the following, in order:
1. Draw back up to five Dream Cards.
2. Pick three Dream Cards from your hand. Then describe a dream you had using the words or
phrases on the cards you chose. The dream you describe can be one you actually had or
completely made-up. You can be as brief or descriptive as you want, as long as the elements
from the cards are used.
3. At least
two
of the Dream Cards you use must share the same emotion (as listed on the bottom).
4. Once you have described your dream, place the Dream Cards you used face-down in front of you.
Then, choose the emotion that corresponds to your dream from your Analysis Deck. Place that
card faced-down in front of you as well.
5. Every other player then chooses one emotion from their Analysis Deck that they think your
dream encompasses. They then place it in front of them, face-down.
6. All players simultaneously reveal their face-down Analysis Cards. The player(s) who’s Analysis
Card matches the patient’s card gains one point.
7. Discard your used Dream Cards and return all Analysis Cards to their respective decks.
8. Play continues to the player on your left.
EXAMPLE OF PLAY
Becky, John, and Mark sit down for a rousing game of
Being Freud.
The group determines that Becky
was the last person to wake up since she was off of work today.

Looking at her hand of Dream Cards, Beck y picks the following:
A Campfire
(anger/trust),
A Funeral
(fear/sadness), and
Being Knighted
(anger/trust). Becky decides to go with Trust, and proceeds to
describe her dream.
“So I had this dream where I was being knighted by my mom next to a big campfire. This happened in
the middle of a funeral.”
Short, sweet, but effective, as Becky places her Trust Analysis Card face-down
in front of her.
John and Mark think for a moment, and then place their selected Analysis Card face-down in front of
them. John says,
“If I can be Freud for a moment…”
and everyone reveals their cards.
John reveals Anger, and Mark reveals Trust. Looking over at Becky’s revealed card (which is still Trust),
Mark yells out a triumphant
“Yes!”
He gets one point.
ADDITIONAL RULES
If you go through the entire Dream Deck, simply reshuffle all of the discarded cards and continue play.
All players are encouraged to use “Being Freud” as the introduction to their analysis (ex. “I’m going to be
Freud for a moment.” Or maybe “While we’re all “Being Freud” here.”)
WINNING THE GAME
The first player(s) to gain seven points wins.
