BYBEE COLLECTION
of American Furniture, recently acquired by the
Dallas Museum of Art, was long regarded as one
of the finest of its type in private hands. Indeed,
Jonathan
L.
Fairbanks, curator of American deco-
rative arts at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, has
termed the Bybee collection one of "the choicest col-
lections of privately owned American antiques in the
country." This catalog of the collection, written by
an expert on American decorative arts and beau-
tifully photographed, amply demonstrates that every
object in the Bybee Collection has its own eloquent
character and that each represents a great moment in
American cabinetmaking.
Mr. and Mrs. Bybee began collecting American an-
tiques
shortly
after world War II. With the friend-
ship and advice of such expert collectors as Vincent
Andrus. Ima Hogg, Henry
F.
Dul'ont, and Anthony
Garvan
,
they became dedicated connoisseurs of early
American furniture and decorative arts
.
Each piece
they acquired had to meet exacting standards, and
today these tables

clocks, beds
,
and other pieces re

veal the high quality and craftsmanship of the cabi-
netmakers of the eastern seaboard.
Because they were both native Texans, the Bybees
were also active in collecting early Texas furniture
and in historic preservation. Their collection reflects
both eastern and Texas influences, a tribute to the
talent and skill of American craftsmen who

in the
midst of conquering a wilderness and forging a new
society. created exceptional works of decorative art
equal to any of the old World masters.
