This jam-packed edition is highlighted by coverage
commemorating the sesquicentennial of the American Civil
War’s climax. The Toy Soldier Museum’s James H. Hillestad
shares how he conducted research and recruited figures from
W. Britain to build a detailed diorama based on the seemingly
little-known but decisive Battle of Sailor’s Creek, Va., the last
major clash of the war.
Federal forces splashed across the little stream to deliver
a major blow to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia April 6,
1865. The defeat led to Lee’s surrender three days later at Appomattox Court House, Va.,
effectively ending the war.
On a related note, yours truly recounts the tragic story of Pvt. Jesse H. Hutchins of
Company A, 5th Alabama Battalion, one of the soldiers from both the North and South
buried in the small Confederate Cemetery at Appomattox. He survived numerous major
battles and everything else that could kill someone during the course of the war only to
die during a sharp skirmish with Union cavalry the evening of April 8, 1865, less than
24 hours before Lee’s surrender 150 years ago.
Elsewhere, Scott J. Dummitt details the history of British Army Highlanders from
the 78th Regiment of Foot (Ross-shire Buffs), including their 19th-century Canadian
connection. The regiment’s sojourn performing garrison duty at the Halifax Citadel in
Nova Scotia has inspired a series of “Museum Collection” figures by W. Britain.
In a departure from the usual seriousness, doom and gloom of military history,
A.J. Mergenthaler delivers a little comic relief this month. The longtime TS&MF
contributor combines military miniatures with incongruous toy figures, such as Disney
items, to create lighthearted vignettes aimed at bringing smiles to his fellow collectors’ faces.
Retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Raymond E. Bell Jr. chronicles the mustering of a miniature
military organization mainly made up of Britains toy soldiers, artillery and vehicles. The 14th
Infantry Division, the centerpiece of his “combat cameos,” has involved into a 1,000-figure-
plus unit encompassing two infantry brigades, an artillery group, a field ambulance and
division headquarters.
Curtis Sleight recounts how hobbyists received a very warm welcome at the 21st Annual
South Florida Toy Soldier, Action Figure, Toy & Collectibles Show. When the event was
held Jan. 25, 2015, in sunny Lake Worth, much of the Northern USA was gripped by a
wintertime deep freeze.
