Dear Reader
We’re a funny lot aren’t we?
We take pride in the fact that our hobby can be all things to all people;
we view our fellows’ collections with real interest – even when they bear
little relation to our own – and we always compliment them on their
achievements.
But somewhere, deep within us, is a nagging feeling that, if they are not
collecting what we collect or they are not collecting it in the same way we
do, they just can’t be gaining the same fulfilment from the hobby that
we are.
I suppose its not too surprising really, when you consider the choices
we have all made along the way: mint or used; Commonwealth or Foreign;
‘commercial’ of ‘philatelic’, stamps or postal history, classics or modern –
the great uniting factor that we have; that we can all collect exactly what we
want in the way that we want (finances and time permitting), will inevitably
also be something of a dividing factor and we have to be careful not to
appear dismissive of anyone else’s approach – even a bit of gentle banter
can be hurtful to some.
In my position I’ve had to develop the hide of a rhinoceros, so a bit of
playful leg-pulling about my philatelic achievements – or lack of them – is
almost inevitable.
A few months ago, during a society auction, someone asked me a
question, to which I answered ‘Yes’ rather more forcefully than I should
have done.
The next thing I heard was the auctioneer saying ‘Sold to Mr Jefferies’
as he brought his gavel down on a nice little collection of cancelled-to-
order Mongolian pictorials of the 1960s and 70s. Needless to say, this gave
everyone present a good deal of amusement and my Mongolian collection
was augmented over the next few meetings by kind donations of further
sets of a similar nature – ‘for my new collection – we’re pleased you’re not
still collecting that boring Commonwealth stuff’.
But what may be frowned upon now by the traditionalists among us
(and I’m as guilty as any) may well prove to be fantastically desirable in
the future.
Collectors of the day clearly thought that his covers were ‘contrived’ and
probably ‘not what philately is all about’, but Roger Wells clearly enjoyed
collecting in the way that he did, and without his activities, and those of
other like-minded individualists, we just would not know the half of what
we do know about the postmarks of smaller post offices in the far-flung
corners of the Empire. However, what we do not know much about is the
man who created all those covers, Roger Wells himself. So David Horry,
another enthusiast for the postmarks of obscure post offices, is trying to
find out more – any information which you can add to the story so far will,
of course, be most welcome.
No doubt, the interest in the man himself will only enhance interest in
the covers he arranged to have sent to him, or his agents; so, just like the
‘souvenir’ Allahabad flight card, which recently fetched over £20,000 at
auction, Roger Wells’ ‘contrived’ covers may command greater and greater
respect (and prices) in the years to come.
If nothing else, that should be a lesson to all of us – what is viewed with
a faint sense of ridicule today may be keenly sought after in the not-too-
distant future
maybe even my new Mongolian pictorials!
