Welcome to another ‘bumper’ issue of
Gibbons Stamp Monthly;
with nearly 100 pages of news, articles
and the Stanley Gibbons catalogue supplement, there should be something to appeal to most collectors—
however far you are down the road of philately and whatever your area of interest.
This month we commence a two-issue celebration of the 40th anniversary of postal independence of
the Channel Islands; Jersey will be the subject of next month’s feature.
David Gurney FRPSL, of the Channel Islands Specialists’ Society, provides introductions to the stamps
and postal history of the Bailiwick and a more specialist article on the postal history of the Wartime
Occupation period, while local author, Chris Morvan, interviews some of those involved in running Guernsey Post during the
‘independent’ period. We also thank Guernsey for providing a free gift for all
Gibbons Stamp Monthly
readers in the form of last
year’s £3 miniature sheet, issued to celebrate the achievements if triple World Touring Car champion, Andy Priaulx. This is an
exciting and substantial gift which would provide a signicant start to a Guernsey collection.
I would like to expand a particular warm welcome to those who may not be regular readers of
Gibbons Stamp Monthly,
perhaps
attracted by the Guernsey miniature sheet or the opportunity to own one of Isle of Man Post’s exclusive Lord’s covers. While I have
to admit that every issue does not include a free gift (although there is another one to look forward to next month), I can guarantee
that every issue does provide the very best value in philatelic publishing. One respected reviewer in the United States recently

Åland Post has
announced that the winner
of the Nobel Peace Prize
2008, Finland’s former
President, Martti Ahtisaari,
has agreed to design an
Åland stamp.

half-year results
Stanley Gibbons is entering the second half of its nancial
year in optimistic mood after lifting prots by 13 per cent
in the rst six months and making a strong start to the
second half. Prot before tax for the six months ended
30 June 2009 jumped to £1.43m from £1.26m in 2008 on
sales up 18 per cent to £9.6m.

with a connection to Åland

The Nobel Committee
decided to award the
Nobel Peace Prize 2008
to Martti Ahtisaari for
his important efforts,
on several continents,
to resolve international
conicts. These efforts
have contributed to a more
peaceful world and to
‘fraternity between nations’
in Alfred Nobel’s spirit.
As a peacemaker, Martti
Ahtisaari has on several
occasions emphasised
the Åland example as a
solution to serious and
long-lasting conicts. He
visited the Åland Islands
many times during his
Presidency, 1994–2000.
Mr Ahtisaari has chosen
to focus on his visit to
Åland for his honeymoon
in 1968 as the basis of his
stamp design. The newly
married couple then stayed
in a little red cabin by the
water, and this is exactly
what is featured on the
stamp. The stamp has
been produced in close
co-operation between Martti
Ahtisaari and the Post’s Art
Director, Cecilia Mattsson.

The stamp will be issued
on 29 September 2009.
Martin Bralsford, Non-Executive Chairman, commented: ‘The
Company’s performance in the rst six months of the nancial year
is remarkable in the prevailing market conditions. The business has

planned launch of a rare stamp investment fund in the rst quarter of 2010 should create the platform

part of a sensible wealth diversication strategy.
‘The formation of a regulated investment product will increase the range of investors which can
participate in our market, including institutional investors and high net worth individuals who feel
more comfortable dealing in a regulated investment product.
‘Whilst we are currently making some immediate changes to our website to realise some short
term benets, we have also allocated more executive resource to this part of our long-term strategy.
Increased focus should ensure that we create a website that encompasses the best attributes of
brand leaders such as Amazon.com and ebay.com, but specically tailored to the requirements of
stamp collectors, which we believe, will transform our marketplace.
‘The current strength in our core rare stamp market, evident from recent auction realisations,
together with a stronger start to trading in the second half to date, leads your Board to remain
condent on the Company’s ability to grow both sales and prots for the full nancial year.’
Mr Brailsford also commented that ‘It is inevitable that the internet will continue to transform the
dynamics of our market and we fully expect to be the primary beneciary, being the biggest and most
well known brand in our market. We are currently implementing some “quick wins” in our website
developments and are in the process of putting in place the right resource and structure to bring this
part of our strategy to the forefront of our business development.
‘The refurbishment of our retail premises at 399 Strand scheduled for early next year will enable
us to present our brand better in its position as the premier brand in philately. The improved
presentation and quality of service from our retail premises in London will prove timely in light of the
London 2010 Festival of Stamps, a once in a decade event, which will see thousands of collectors
from all over the world congregate in London.
‘We are now making some tangible progress, working with an investment partner, in the launch of
a rare stamp investment fund. We hope that the launch of such a fund will provide the recognition that
rare stamps deserves as a credible asset class as part of a sensible wealth diversication strategy.
‘Our new investment sales ofce in Jersey is scheduled to open in October. Our marketing plans
surrounding the opening of our new ofce there are expected to result in the recruitment of new
investment clients in the second half of the year’.

Prior to Bryan Adams’ sell-out concert in Ottawa on 12 August
2009, Canada Post’s Director
Stamp Services, Jim Phillips,
presented the internationally
renowned singer-songwriter
and photographer with a
framed enlargement of his own
commemorative stamp. The
stamp was issued this summer
under the theme of Canadian
Recording Artists.
The Norfolk Island Post and
Philatelic Bureau advise
that the stamp issue to be
released for the 30 Years
of Self-Determination has
been withdrawn. It has been
replaced with a single $10
stamp with the words ‘30 Years
of Self-Government’ that was
released on 19 August 2009.

Excerpts from the
Gibraltar Art and
Archives auction
Highlights amongst the unissued items in the Gibraltar Philatelic
Bureau Ltd Art and Archives auction, which closes on Tuesday 27
October 2009, include the 1995 preparation of an ‘Endangered
Species’ ‘World Wildlife Fund’ issue, finally released in September
1996.
Highly regarded local artist Olympia Reyes produced a
stunning series of four designs—of the Red Kite—these were
prepared with printer’s ‘overlays’ but were finally unadopted in
favour of designs by Roger Gorringe which became SG 784/7
(estimate £300 each).

EVENTS
The list of ancillary events to the London 2010 Festival of
Stamps is growing. The latest additions to the programme
which now have confirmed dates include:
British Museum Money Gallery—Exhibition of African
Stamps, Coins and Banknotes
This exhibition will show the imagery of colonial rule and
independence and the role of these miniature artworks in the
creation of national identity.
This event will run from 6 May 2010 until October 2010.
British Library Philatelic Collections
The Philatelic Collections are re-displaying their 1000
philatelic frames with significant and rare new material and
running a programme of educational talks throughout the
whole of 2010.
Bath Postal Museum
Exhibition on King George V from 1 February to 31 October
2010.
Royal Philatelic Society London
Two-day (6 and 7 May 2010) display by the other Royal
Philatelic Societies around the world, including those in New
Zealand, Canada, Australia and South Africa, to include talks
and presentations.
Philatex Extra
The Philatex International Stamp and Cover Show will be
holding an additional event to coincide with the opening of
the International. This will take place at its usual venue, the
Horticultural Halls, Greycoat Street, London on 5 and 6 May
2010.
In 2002 the Bureau prepared the 31 October issue celebrating
the 18th Birthday of Prince Harry. A ‘tousle-headed’ Prince Harry
was produced through to proof stage—but finally rejected in
favour of the ‘clean-cut’ look of the 66p SG 1023 (MS1024). Just 2
miniature sheets are in the archive (estimate £600 each).
For the 2008 ‘Europa’ issue—an innovative design of famous
letter writers was produced just at the time of a postal rates
change. The John F Kennedy 44p value printed as the unissued
42p denomination in a complete imperforate proof sheetlet of
10 is expected to make £950. Only one complete sheetlet is
offered intact, the other sheetlet in the archive was broken into
imperforate pairs estimated at £200 each.
London 2010 Jurors
These are just a few highlights of unissued/amended proofs

CitySprint expand
As the current Royal Mail strikes bite into the Company’s
business, private courier firms appear to be benefiting from the
customer fall-out.
CitySprint, probably the UK’s largest privately owned ‘same
day’ courier network, has announced its acquisition of Telford-
based courier company Jaguar Couriers Ltd, for an undisclosed
sum.
The acquisition further adds to the Company’s presence in the
Midlands where it already has service centres in Birmingham,
Nottingham and Warwick. CitySprint has taken over Jaguar
Couriers’ 10,000 sq ft premises in Telford which will become its
first service centre in the area and will provide additional support
for customers in West Shropshire, Wolverhampton, Cannock and
Stafford.
