INTRODUCTION
We are pleased to present the completely revised
and updated sixth edition of the
Standard Catalog of
World Coins 1701-1800.
This edition not only con-
tains three years of market adjustments, it provides
expanded descriptions, pricing in four grades of pres-
ervation and hundreds of new images.
Market adjustments are where we have spent the
bulk of our time. Gold and silver bullion prices have
risen since the fifth edition was produced and the
values represented in this volume have taken into
account those new levels.
This volume contains a wealth of data for the Ger-
man States and the Holy Roman Empire, France,
Great Britain, Spain, Russia, Italian States, Poland,
Portugal and new world colonies such as Brazil and
Mexico. Concise listings of minors and fractional
issues, which have generally been available to col-
lectors and dealers only in long out-of-print, difficult
to locate, non-English references, are presented
here in an easy-to-use format, making this catalog
an excellent one-stop resource.
In keeping with the traditions that have been held
in focus with the
Standard Catalog of World Coins
from the very first edition, this volume is organized
in a user-friendly format. An alphabetical sort order
has been incorporated for countries of issue. Efforts
have been made to indicate each change in political
structure or issuing authority and its associated
coinage. The listings are generally arranged by
denomination, which now appear with each listing.
Coins are heavily illustrated by basic types, to the
point that there is a virtual certainty you will find a
photo match to the designs, or at least a clear
description of any 18th century coins that may come
into your possession. To facilitate the easy identifi-
cation and attribution of coins of the era, this volume
features numerous helpful mint and privy mark
charts in the country introductions.
The
Standard Catalog of World Coins 1701-1800
6th Edition is the result of nearly 40 years of
research by more than 200 respected numismatic
experts around the world. True to the stated objec-
tive of the original
Standard Catalog of World Coins
(published in 1971), this edition augments the cur-
rent family of five century reference catalogs, which
conveniently replace a shelf of often-elusive special-
ized books, many of which are obscure and when
found, very expensive.
The updated sixth edition provided an opportunity
for focus on some specific areas long in need of
heavy revision such as India and includes pricing
revisions throughout. More detail and improved
descriptions are found in every country. The result is
an over 1,400-page book complete with detailed
information no collector or dealer can do without.
Does this mean this
Standard Catalog of World

volume represents unquestioned
completeness of coverage for the era? No.
Is it a definitive work, on the basis of authoritative-
ness and exhaustiveness? Yes.
Is it the ultimate word on the subject that will ever
be published? We certainly hope not.
What this is, in effect, is a living and breathing
book. This is a reference that will grow and benefit
your future interests, in the presentation of succes-
sor editions, to the measure of what you, the user,
contribute to make it something more than it is at
