which Colin
was working on almost every day. After that
one went to the printer Colin set us all to
work, at Clifford’s request, compiling data on
earlier coinage. First we moved back to 1750,
then 1701 and finally back to 1601. Attempts
were even made to move the catalog back
to 1501, which we achieved for the German
States and a few other areas before time and
cost became too great and the project was
abandoned.
The first speaker at Colin’s memorial service
in 2017 was his old friend, Clifford Mishler,
who summed up Colin’s contributions to the
Standard Catalogs and our hobby very nicely:
“Bruce came on board at Krause
Publications in 1974 and spearheaded
publication of the third edition in 1975 as its
editor. He was the lead cataloger and editor
of all subsequent editions published annually
through the 35th published in 2007, during
which time it expanded from a single volume
reference of about 1000 pages, to a massive
five-volume set comprising a combined 6000-
plus pages, covering all issues from the early
17th century to the early 21st century.
“Bruce similarly served as the lead
cataloger and founding editor of the
Standard
Catalog of World Paper Money
(Pick), the first edition of which
appeared in 1975, and of the ongoing editions that appeared prior to
his retirement. That original 720-page reference grew to become a
three-volume set – dedicated to General Issues, Modern Issues, and
Specialized Issues – that embraced some 4000 total pages.
“Colin was, in my opinion, in a global sense, the most outstanding
numismatic cataloger of his era,” Clifford concluded.
I have heard many stories about Colin from his early years with the
company: his very late and chaotic arrival after accepting a job offer
as editor; his essential corrections to those earliest Standard Catalogs
in the areas of India and later China; his eccentric communications
and unusual style. Colin retired in 2008, but he never really left. I
often smile thinking about his daily office attire of bib overalls and an
engineer cap; or of his pack-rat nature which convinced management
to have him move his work area every few years so he would clean his
desk (or at least box it all up and take it home); or his use of colorful
phrases like “Let your conscience be your guide”, which meant, if you
are behind in your work, you better come in on the weekend; and, of
course, his use of “happy trails” to mark the end of the day, a project,
or a complex conversation.
I could go on, but the most important things to remember
about Colin involve his persistence and ability to think large and in
a structural manner. Colin was always the driving force during these
years of building the Standard Catalog of World Coins series. Many
people did much work and people around the world contributed solely
because at the eye of the hurricane sat Colin, at a cluttered desk from
which he could extract almost anything he needed to advance this
lifelong project.
We all owe him a great debt and those who knew him will miss him
dearly, warts and all. Happy trails my friend.

The first time 
I set foot in the Krause Publications
offices in Iola was in the winter of
1987. It was a Sunday and the offices were closed, but I had an
interview scheduled and knocked on doors until a fella in work clothes
opened up and let me in.
I explained I was there for an interview with the Human Resources
director. He told me the HR director would not be getting there for a
while, got me a cup of coffee and we talked until two other fellas in
work clothes showed up. The first guy wandered off down a dark hall
wishing me good luck, while the other two guys sat down and we
talked for a while longer and had more coffee.
Finally a guy in a suit showed up. He wasn’t the HR person, but he
wanted to begin the interview. This was Clifford Mishler, then Publisher
for Numismatics at KP. Among the many things he asked, two stuck
out: Could I write and would I be OK with working long hours, as this
was not a 40-hour-a-week job. Yes being the answer to both, Clifford
seemed satisfied.
Just about then the director of HR arrived and I was handed over
for a review of the benefits and policies. Clifford said that was all that
was left to do, as I had already interviewed with KP founder Chet
Krause, U.S. market analyst Bob Wilhite and

Yep, the three fellas in work clothes were three of the seminal
figures in modern world numismatics, not janitors working on a
Sunday morning as I had suspected. This was a lesson to me in the
tenor of the company, the work ethic and the humility of those who
built the reference I had used since 1974. That third janitor, Colin R.
Bruce II, passed away at the age of 77 in 2017, leaving behind a legacy
of the most comprehensive world numismatic reference catalog series
ever produced and leaving his coworkers with memories of crazy times
and colossal achievements.
When I arrived, the entirety of the Standard Catalog of World Coins
was one catalog. There was data covering coins of the entire world
from 1801 to present. But things were brewing; I noticed a new book
