ISSUE…

IN THIS
WELCOME TO
THE JET AGE!
This issue is somewhat
different to others published
recently in that we have
decided to offer only modern
subjects for our builds,
rather than being concerned
with subjects across a more
diverse period of time. We
hope you approve!
Before diving into the two
kit reviews that we hope you
enjoy this month, we’d like
to introduce two features
that cover the same aircraft,
though in two different
scales. The F-18 Hornet is
one of the most recognisable
shapes in the sky, so we
thought it about time that
it was covered in detail
within the pages of MAI.
Thankfully for the modeller
there is no shortage of kits
of this family of aircraft,
so modellers will not be
hamstrung by a paucity of
choice should they decide
to have a go at building one
in miniature. This month
two kits were chosen,
Academy’s 1:72 offering
and then the larger Kinetic
kit, the latter creating a
slightly stripped-back variant
without weapons. Both of
these kits are excellent
from the box, nevertheless
it was decided to detail
both with aftermarket and
scratchbuilt features to help
both improve their look and
in the case of the Academy
kit, create the dropped flaps
and slats that are so much
a feature of the aircraft on
the ground. The two builds
are offered as photographic
essays so you will have little
problem following what we
did to create the models
seen in this issue, all of the
items used and techniques
employed along the way,
being clear and easy to
follow! The features start on
page 44.
Along with the extended
look at the Hornet, we
also have two in-depth kit
reviews, Greg Phillips’ look
at the superb Revell 1:48
Tornado F.3 and then John
Wilkes’ appraisal of the
Kitty Hawk Models 1:35 AH/
MH-6J Night Stalker. Both of
these fine kits can be turned
into real show-stoppers in
the hands of experienced
modellers and that has
certainly been proven to
be the case this month,
the resulting replicas being
testament to both the skill of
the authors involved and the
quality of the basic kits. But
don’t be put of should you
be less experienced, you
will still find much to enjoy
and inspire from both of
these features, features that
appear on pages 24 and 32
respectively.
And finally, we have
three kit previews that will
hopefully set the juices
flowing and the wallets
opening as the year
progresses, with looks at
the Revell 1:32 P-51D-5NA
Mustang, Azur 1:32 IAR-
80A and Airfix 1:48 North
American P-51D Mustang.
In providing a balance to
our modern subjects this
month, these kits also point
to lengthy, in-depth features
that we are planning for the
next few months, as well as
illustrating that WWII and its
aircraft, is as fertile ground
as it ever was for the world’s
kit manufacturers!
