Crewmen of KG 54 at Coulommiers in France in summer 1940. After early missions over
the North Sea and the English Channel Luftwaffe crews were trained in anti-shipping
operations, in order to mount ship-hunting raids along the sea approaches to the main
harbours of England’s south and east coasts. Crews were also taught to release their aerial
mines in the vicinity of these important targets.
