T
he camp and bitchy queen, the gay best friend, the
impossibly stylish one… for years, gay men were
often reduced to these tired stereotypes in the media –
from Hollywood blockbusters to small-screen soaps.
But as our collective voice grew, we said enough
is enough, and we then encouraged more diverse
representation, to show that gay men come in all
shapes and sizes, from all walks of life, and encompass
the entire colour spectrum of the rainbow.
Yet despite the gay community’s desire for more
nuanced representation in the media, we’ve created
a whole slew of labels by which to identify – ”tribes”
of gay men, distinguished by our appearances and
sexual proclivities.
You’ll be familiar with bears, the original gay tribe,
born of resistance in the fashionable leather bars of
1980s San Francisco. Not wanting to follow the popular
hanky code, men (often of a larger and hairier build)
began to place small teddy bears into their shirt
pockets, a symbol of their desire for not just sex, but for a
hug and a little bit of affection too.

MENAGERIE
• BEAR
Big build, with a belly
and lots of hair. Typically older,
rugged and masculine.
• WOLF
Muscular/athletic build –
some hair. Typically older
and masculine.
• SILVER FOX
Muscular or athletic
build and grey-haired.
Older with some body hair.
• CUB
Chunky build with lots
of hair, typically younger.
• BULL
Super-muscular build,
any hair style, any age.
• OTTER
Slim or lean build with
lots of hair, typically younger.
• PUP
Slender build, little hair.
Young and submissive.
• CHICKEN
Slim or skinny build,
hairless and young.
• GYM BUNNY
Muscular or
sculpted build, any hair
and under 50.
But now, decades on, there is a whole menagerie of
animal-based tribes in the gay community. The younger
bears are cubs, leaner but still hairy men are otters,
young and eager guys with submissive tendencies are
pups and gym bunnies are muscular and sculpted
guys obsessed with their physique. The list goes on –
even giraffes (tall gay guys of course) get a mention.
So, is it all just a bit of fuzzy fun and a way to connect
with like-minded guys, or is it time to set the men free
from the menagerie? Do the stereotypes – most of
which are based on appearances alone – hold as true as
they once did, or are these animal-shaped boxes keeping
people caged?
Here at Attitude, together with Jaguar, we’re all
about defying these stereotypes and breaking the
mould. And in the coming months, we’ll be exploring
this issue in a series of advertorials. Because we
think there’s something to be said for breaking away
from the pack and going your own way; something
to be said for being your own animal.
