T’S BECOME A BIT OF A CLICHÉ
to compare the
diving experience with how we imagine space-
walks to be, but as a comparison it’s hard to resist.
Perhaps they’re even more similar than we thought.
Have you ever done something so daft on a dive that
it makes you want the seabed to swallow you up?
You scan the area ever-so-casually, taking in all the
divers in range in an effort to establish whether there
are any witnesses to your folly (don’t forget, there’s
always likely to be one lurking above you).
I’m sure most of us have done this at some time or
other. If we’re lucky the other divers will have been
too intent on their own dive to notice, and won’t
have been focusing an action-cam on you, ready to
post the embarrassing footage online.
Reassuring proof that such lapses happen even to the
most superhuman of beings occurred recently, but in
this case the transgression was definitely noticed. An
action-cam was involved, but in the culprit’s hands.

That culprit was astronaut Drew Feustel, a flight
engineer on the International Space Station so, you’d imagine, pretty
savvy. He had embarked on a six-hour spacewalk with a space-buddy
to work on the ship’s external cooling system, and needed to record
the proceedings on his GoPro. Yes, even astronauts use them.
“Hey Houston, I gotta ask a question about the GoPro real quick,”
says Feustal, as we eavesdrop on YouTube. “I’m pushing the button,
and I see a ‘No SD’ – that means, do I need that to record? And if it’s
recording, is there supposed to be a red light on?”
After a long hiatus Houston replies: “I’m told that if it has the card in
it, it should have a red light if it’s recording.”
“And if it says ‘No SD’, what does that mean?” asks the starman.
“I think that means no card.”
As on a dive, you can’t just pop back if you’ve forgotten something.
Diver or spacewalker, we can feel Feustal’s pain, but there would be no
hiding place from the stream of online “comment” that followed.
