Editorial
To all of our readers, we
want to extend a great big
“Thank You!” Yet another
year is coming to a close and
once again you have shown
us how relevant trains and
railroading is, even when
naysayers preach that the end
of the hobby is nigh. If any-
thing, we’ve proven that the
affection and fascination for
those large machines on rails
is as strong as ever!
I want to thank each one of
you for the diversity that you
bring to the table. In my
opinion, that’s what makes
our hobby so appealing. I
enjoy modeling, but I’m also
an avid railfanner. I am in-
trigued by history and how
the railroads have played
their part in industrial and
passenger service as well as
the forward progression of
entire towns and cities.
Architecture has lunch with
Art before having drinks with
a hundred year old Steamer
and dancing the night away
with an Interurban. Every-
thing is connected as every-
thing should be. Too often
our hobby is portrayed with
blinders on: you are a model-
er, a railfan or a fan of rail-

roadiana. Many that don’t
partake in our hobby believe
that we sit in our basements
and put on our engineer’s cap
and run our trains around in a
circle. They think we are an-
tisocial.
What they don’t realize is the
tightly woven fabric of our
community. We share our
knowledge with each other
and fan the flames of interest
in other topics within the rail-
roading genre. I know that I
have learned more from indi-
viduals within our communi-
ty and our hobby than I ever
would have without all of
you. Many model railroading
clubs go on fan trips or club
outings and picnics at railfan-
ning hotspots.
Whenever I get “bored” with
one part of my hobby, it’s
nice to be able to stretch my
creative legs exploring anoth-
er aspect of it while still re-
maining with the topic I love.
I also want to point out an-
other way the various aspects
of our hobby touch each oth-
er. There are so many ideas
we can get from things like
railfanning and participating
on fan trips that can be incor-
porated into our modeling.

The directions of the tracks,
the proximity to buildings,
parks and waterways are all
priceless fuel for your next
project. The colors and im-
perfections in the bricks, the
rooflines and streets are all
perfect little details to add
realism to your miniature
world.
On the flipside, doing re-
search for industries and
track layouts for your model
can take you out of your
basement or spare bedroom
and into the real world to
experience your hobby in
real time.
It really is a special thing
that we are all a part of;
pieces of a puzzle that fit
together to create an infinite
culture of enthusiasts. By
embracing that which
makes us different, we find
ourselves the same. Enjoy
your hobby and explore the
many ways that make it the
greatest!

debris-choked decks, these tired workhorses add grit and realism to any train or yard.
Here’s how I add years of abuse to my gondolas – in under two hours:
