A
S AN iconic and war-winning weapon we felt that we could not ignore the 75th anniversary of the
first flight of a Lancaster bomber on 9 January, 1941, and, in particular, the aircraft’s subsequent
service to RAF Bomber Command between late 1941 and right through to the end of the war in 1945.
In keeping with our usual treatment of such subjects, Britain at War Magazine’s coverage of this milestone
anniversary concerns itself more with the remarkable men who flew in the Lancaster rather than of the remarkable
machine itself. In that context, we look at a story of extraordinary courage surrounding Flt Lt Ian Bazalgette who
won the Victoria Cross after his heroic efforts in a blazing Lancaster as well as relating an account of the man who
famously photographed the bombing of the German battleship Tirpitz from a Lancaster bomber. Whilst the aircraft
itself was truly magnificent, then the men who flew in them were surely doubly-so.
Additionally, this month, we take a look at the exploits of those who flew in another remarkable
aircraft during the Falklands war; the incomparable Harrier. Again, our focus is on the men who
flew them rather than the machine. Lancaster men and Harrier men – we salute you!

Norwegian fjord on 12 November 1944.
The ship was sunk during the attack
which was filmed and photographed by
Flt Lt Hugh Rogers on board a special
film unit Lancaster. We tell his story
