GETTING THE GOAT
The M561 Gama Goat might look like a 4x4 towing a trailer, but it’s actually a single
six-wheel vehicle with a four-wheel steering set-up. Roger Gamaunt came up with
the clever articulated joint that joined the two sections, hence ‘Gama’. The ‘Goat’ bit
came from its off-road ability. It was an early sixties creation, manufactured by the
Consolidated Diesel Electric Company (CONDEC) and featured a deafening two-stroke
Detroit diesel engine. Some saw service in Vietnam and despite being classed as
amphibious, it wasn’t a strong swimmer. It wasn’t that easy to drive on land, either.
Some 15,274 were built between 1969-73.
