When The Beatles split,
McCartney was understandably in
pretty bad shape. To the world at
large it was the end of a glorious
knees-up, but to the Liverpudlian
20-something it was “breaking
from your lifelong friends”; the
guys with whom he’d realised his
dreams. That sort of bond builds
relationships that are hard to
break, but this was no ordinary
clique… “It was difficult to know
what to do after the Beatles. How
do you follow that?” he said to
BBC4’s John Wilson. Surely the
understatement of the century.
Although the lives of both Lennon
and Harrison were tragically
cut short, Paul was still without
doubt the most prolific, the most
experimental, and arguably the
most daring of all of the band post-
Beatles. When he chose to shave
the beard and put the whisky back
in the cabinet, with Linda’s help,
his mojo returned stronger than
ever. He formed Wings and from
there produced some of his finest
material, Beatles or no Beatles.
Since then, he’s never stopped.
Yes, there have been plenty of
misfires, and his personal life has
been punctuated with tragedy
and a prying, stressful divorce,
but he’s succeeded in putting that
past to bed as best he can and has
continued to make great records,
dignity intact.
In 2016 McCartney was named
the UK’s most successful albums
act of all time. In short, he really is
one of architects of British pop and
continues to keep the youngsters
on their toes. Enjoy the issue…
