GREAT DANES HAVE EXCITING PLANS
THE IAAF World Cross Country Championships began
the challenging process of recovering its reputation
last weekend as Kampala staged a vibrant event which
culminated in a thrilling end to the men’s race (see p6).
In the quest to resurrect its ailing fortunes, though,
the event is poised to make another giant step forward
in 2019 when the next edition of the championships is
held on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark.
The Danes are known for their Viking history, but the
organisers say they have plundered inspiration from
the British cross-country scene ahead of an event that
they promise will strike a delicate balance between old
school traditions and innovative ideas (see
News,
p34).
Among other things, Aarhus plans to
incorporate mass participation races on
a similar scale to our English ‘National’
Championships into their 2019 World
Cross programme. In addition, the course
will feature some truly testing and unique
challenges and the Danes hope they can
re-brand the art of cross country so that
it begins to rival road and trail running for
popularity and prestige.
If all their hard work and ideas pay off,
a revitalised World Cross could provide
a springboard for a successful bid to
be part of the Winter Olympics. Who
knows, perhaps the British cross-country fraternity
might also learn a trick or two about marketing to add
to their unrivalled organisational ability.
Denmark’s only problem is that it’s unlikely to provide
many of its own cross-country contenders in an event
that has become dominated by Africa to an incredible
degree (every single individual, team and relay medallist
in Kampala was born in Africa). The Scandinavian
country has not held the World Cross before and never
won a medal in the event, while their best known
endurance runner is the Kenyan-born Wilson Kipketer,
although they did produce a European cross-country
champion in 1997 called Carsten Jørgensen.
Perhaps the staging of the 2019 World Cross might
help Denmark find a new Jørgensen, especially as part
of the organisers’ plans is the staging of a nationwide
series of children’s races that will culiminate on the
World Cross weekend itself.
