SHOULD GB SEND MEN TO UGANDA?
AT the first IAAF World Cross Country Championships
in 1973, a total of 34 runners from Great Britain and
Northern Ireland took part in the senior men’s race.
Yet that figure has fallen to zero ahead of the 2017
event later this month in Uganda (News, p21).
Of course back in ’73 there were separate teams
for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The only Africans at the inaugural event, meanwhile,
were from Tunisia and Morocco.
Much has changed over the years. The home
countries stopped sending individual teams in 1988
and the following year marked the last occasion a
British man won a medal when Tim Hutchings took
silver behind John Ngugi.
Lately, the men’s race at the World
Cross has been dominated by Kenyans
and Ethiopians, leaving many European
countries, including Britain, reluctant to
send athletes to the other side of the
world if they are going to get thrashed.
Question is, though, will they improve by
staying at home?
“You’re not going to get better by
sitting on your a*** watching it on telly,”
one of Britain’s distance-running greats
told me this week.
He has a point. Marathon legend
Steve Jones was 103rd in his first World
Cross aged 22 but went on to break
the marathon world record. In Guiyang two years ago
Andy Butchart was one of four British men who toed
the line. He finished back in 86th but the experience
can hardly have harmed him, given his recent form.
This is not a new debate. Back in 2009 UKA said
that while it “continues to value the importance of
the World Cross” it also has “to be realistic about the
impact” that British runners can make.
Added to this, several top GB men, such as Inter-
Counties winner Andy Vernon, have shown disinterest
in racing in the 2017 event in Uganda.
For me, I believe there’s much to be said for the
simple honour of representing your country at a global
championships and we should send a full team. But
