Contemporary Voices of White Nationalism in America
This book presents ten alarmingly candid interviews by some of the
most prominent members of what editors Carol M. Swain and Russ
Nieli warn is a growing white nationalist movement in America. The
ten people featured in this volume make statements that are sure to
shock, amuse, challenge, and provoke the typical reader. Their remarks
are of particular value, Swain and Nieli believe, for understanding how
the many race-conscious whites who lie outside the integrationist con-
sensus on racial issues in America view developments that have taken
place in the United States since the great victories of the civil rights
movement in the
1950s
and
1960s.
If current trends continue, the
editors predict, white nationalist ideas will become ever more popular,
especially as whites become a diminishing portion of the U.S. popula-
tion. What is most needed now, Swain and Nieli conclude, is for the
claims of white nationalists to be aired in more open public forums,
where they can be vigorously challenged and subjected to honest
evaluation and refutation.
Carol M. Swain is Professor of Political Science and Professor of
Law at Vanderbilt University. She is the author of
Black Faces, Black
Interests: The Representation of African Americans in Congress
(1993,
1995),
which was selected by
Library Choice Journal
as one of the
seven outstanding academic books of
1994.
Black Faces
was also the
winner of the
1994
Woodrow Wilson prize of the American Political
Science Association for “the best book published in the United States
during the prior year on government, politics or international affairs,”
the co-winner of the V. O. Key Award of the Southern Political Science
Association for the best book published on Southern politics, and the
winner of the
1995
D. B. Hardeman Prize of the Lyndon Baines
Johnson Foundation for the best scholarly work on the U.S. Congress
during a biennial period. Her latest book,
The New White National-
ism in America: Its Challenge to Integration,
was published by Cam-
bridge University Press in
2002.
Russ Nieli received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton
University’s Politics Department, where he is presently a lecturer. Dr.
Nieli authored a study of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and is
currently working on a book on the decline of inner-city African-
American communities in the decades following the
1960s.
He has also
edited an important anthology on affirmative action.
