s we went to press, there had
been huge snowfalls in the
Alps, kick starting the ski season
here, and from what I’ve heard,
there’s been a little bit in the UK too. Perfect
timing, then, for this winter-themed issue
in which we delve into the full array of winter
pastimes, from ski touring, ice climbing
and winter alpinism in the Alps, to winter
walking and mountaineering in Scotland.
To this we’ve thrown in some Sierra Nevada
backpacking and a wee chat with Nepalese
mountaineer Pasang Lhamu Sherpa for
good measure!
But winter definitely takes the limelight in
this issue, with Alun Richardson and Bill
Strachan choosing 50 classic winter routes
to try in Scotland (p20), and Will Harris
discussing the options for climbing in the
Alps in winter (p36), plus essential advice on
reading avalanche bulletins (p44) and
climbing gullies (p54). Enjoy the issue!
