the roof at Vectis
he Vectis Specialist
sale held recently
opened with over
100 lots from The
East Yorkshire Collection
(Part 1), and featured a
range of models including
Norev,
Minichamps
and Autoart. The sale
continued with specialist
and general toys, which
had in excess of 100
lots of tinplate and
plastic, among which
was an impressive
collection of model
ships and boats.
A rarity was the Wallwork
(UK) cast iron Double
Decker Bus in green and
cream, bearing the Hants
& Dorset logo. This had
originally been produced as
a promotional model. Apart
from some chipping and
replacement tyres, this was
an impressive model at over
12 inches long.It was also
the first that Vectis had ever
offered. Estimated at £600-
£800, the bus finally sold for
an astonishing £1,800.
One
of
the
greatest
exponents of the detailed
miniature, Autoart, is much
more well known to collectors
and its 1/12th scale rendering
of the Nissan GTR (finished
in silver) didn’t hang about.
Mint (as you’d expect), it was
boxed and sped off to reach
£264, a little under double its
estimate. Meanwhile on the
shipping front, an American
made Dumas Brooklyn Steam
Tug Boat was a live steam,

Wallwork made this very scarce double decker in
cast iron: it was a promotional model.
kit-built model of a New York
Harbour tug. Comprising a
vacuum formed plastic hull
and superstructure, it was
fitted with a wooden deck.
A gas-fired, in-line, twin
cylinder oscillating engine
provided the power and its
estimate of £200-£400 was
easily passed, selling for
£504.
Some readers will know
that Playcraft was a sister
company to Mettoy and in
the 1950s, it paved the way
for Corgi. A rare Electric
Highways Road System (No.1
Set) in HO/OO scale, fetched
£312, way over the £30 top
estimate. It comprised a
yellow and blue Chevrolet
Sedan
3103,
a
yellow
Ford Lorry 3301, track,
controllers, accessories and
an instruction booklet.
Elsewhere,
a
Tri-ang/
Lines Bros. Carter Paterson
Wooden Morris Van, dating
from the 1920s, was another
unusual lot. At 19 inches long,
it comprised a mixture of
wood and steel. Some rusting
to the bright plated parts was
noted, as was general paint
wear, but otherwise the model
was complete and in good
overall condition. Estimated
at £400-£500, it sold for just
short of £800.
Lastly,
any
railway
enthusiast
would
have
coveted
the
model
of
Stephenson’s
Rocket.
Beautifully
constructed
(although unpowered) in 2�½
inch gauge, this model of
the famous locomotive was
formed in copper, brass, steel
and wood, and was possibly
scratch built by an engineer.
Moving wheels and motion,
with an opening firebox door
and pivoted safety valve arm
with detachable weight, were
all lovely features. Complete
with wooden plinth, track and
an etched name plate, this
evocative 18” pioneer was
near mint and was thought
to be worth a paltry £15-£30.
Too many collectors were
interested on the day, though,
and it finally went for a
creditable £204.

Make mine Meccano!
Steel construction sets, cranes and vintage cabinets prove to be top-draw at Vectis.
AUCTION REVIEW
An example of the ever-popular streamlined
locomotive, this Mallard certainly didn’t duck out
and raced away to achieve over £500.
Is this the greatest Meccano model bar none? Gigantic,
and impressive, thisblock setting crane was an example of
what can be achieved with Meccano (and enough parts).
The box itself was described
as generally excellent with
Meccano Outfit No.10 in gold
lettering to the box lid and
underside. This desirable lot
attracted huge interest and
the top end estimate of £1,200
was almost doubled when it
sold for £2,280.
Equal interest was shown
in the Meccano late issue
No.10 Outfit in dark blue and
yellow which was contained
in a triple drawer cabinet
with plastic tray inserts. This
galloped away (if such can be
said of construction toys) to
achieve £2,520.
Star of the show though was
the Meccano Block Setting
Crane, expertly built using
gold and blue Meccano, a red
and gold geared roller bearer,
a Hornby T20 Transformer
and an E020 Meccano Blue
Side
Plate
Motor.
This
stunning creation, measuring
58 inches in length and
standing 30 inches tall,
came on a base with
runners. Unsurprisingly,
it caused huge interest,
the hammer closing on
£1,200, a considerable way
over its estimate. Finally,
the motorised Meccano
shop display model of an
Excavator and Dumper
found a new home for £720.
Other interesting lots
included a Hornby Dublo
3-rail 3211 4-6-2 Loco
and Tender BR green
A4
Class
“Mallard”,
No.60022. This locomotive
was fitted with nickel
plated driving wheels
and was described as
near mint in an excellent
box with guarantee slip,
instructions, test tag and
even a spanner. Estimated
at £100-140, the Mallard
chuffed on to reach £528.
I
f you thought that
old-fashioned
steel
construction toys had
gone out of vogue,
think again! A recent Vectis
sale featured a number of
Meccano sets, all of which
performed spectacularly,
easily passing their pre-
sale estimates.
Best of the bunch had to
be the Meccano six-drawer
Dealer’s Cabinet from the
1950s. It came complete
with headboard and parts
card and the drawers
were divided into sections
and lettered from A to F.
Each drawer contained a
large quantity of packeted
parts. Contents were noted
as excellent plus to near
mint, with the cabinet in
excellent condition. The
somewhat modest estimate
of £800-1,000 was quickly
eclipsed,
the
cabinet
finding a new home for £2,880.
Another interesting lot
was the Meccano No.6 nickel
set, circa 1925. This plain
coloured variety of Meccano
exerts a strange influence
on collectors and it isn’t that
often encountered. A number
of parts were contained in
a good plus to excellent box
with instructions for Book
No.1, dated July 1925. Again,
a modest estimate of £280-360
belied its true value, and it
finally sold for £648.
More familiar was the
Meccano No.4 red and green
outfit with a number of parts,
although the top tray parts
had been restrung on to a
non-original backing board.
Instructions were dated 1935
and contents were good. This
set made £480, over four
times the estimate.
An oddity was the Meccano
Connecting Outfit No.4-H
with parts in blue, green
and gold. A number of parts
had been restrung to a non-
original backing board in the
top tray but this didn’t deter
bidders at all, who doubled
its pre-sale estimate: the set
finally sold for £624. The rare
Meccano Outfit K10 in blue
and gold included a boxed
clockwork motor, an electric
E1/20 motor, boilers, digger
bucket and a number of other
parts.
Instructions
were
present and this pre-WW2 set
had bidders digging deep, as
it finally realised £624.
A 1951 Meccano Outfit
No.10 red and green with a
number of parts in red, green
and black was contained in a
wooden box with two lift-out
trays, and included a number
of packeted parts. This set
included instructions for
Outfits No.6, 7 and 8, 9 and
10, date-coded accordingly.

Pint-sized robot
with provenance
reached £200 in Earth money.
Besides the Star Wars
interest there was a host
of railway items, (tenders,
coaches and track), comics,
cinema posters (quads), dolls,
teddies, plenty of tinplate
and some good figurines. In
the latter category, selling
for £70, was an Elastolin two
horse drawn combat wagon in
7cm scale on a correct base,
contained within a Harrods
box. The four horse version
in similar packaging was
knocked down for £60. Both
were in excellent condition.
A Dinky Toys wooden shop
display cabinet was another
eye-catching piece. With five
shelves and appropriate Dinky
lettering, it would have been
perfect for your Binns Road
modelled miniatures. Someone
bid this all the way to £460. In
contrast, a Dinky Toys metal
tiered stand also found a
new home, but this time for a
reasonable £90.

NEW TOY FAIR COMES TO WALES
Chris Dyer Fair’s 2017 calendar is getting bigger and it will be great
news for collectors in North Wales and the North West of England.
Rhyl Leisure Centre will host its event on Sunday 19th March 2017
which is the day following the already well-established Oswestry Toy
& Train Sale. Chris told us “We have been keen to establish three or
four shows each year on the North Wales coast and within easy reach
of the A55 Expressway and the main London to Holyhead Railway.
We have decided to use venues at Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and now
Rhyl in addition to our annual show at Llangollen. The Centre at Rhyl
is large, light and easily accessed and has the benefit of a large free
car park. We are all looking forward to this new venture, which will
help to fill yet another gap in the market”. More information can be

September auction
were some very
interesting Star Wars lots,
including a scratchbuilt R2-
D2. What was special about
this life-sized replica was
that it had been signed by Mr
R2-D2 himself, Kenny Baker,
who spotted it at a swapmeet.
Sadly Kenny passed away in
August but his memory lives
on amongst enthusiasts. It was
a popular lot, attracting plenty
of bidding before the hammer
finally fell at £650.
Other Star Wars lots
included a Hasbro Revenge
of the Jedi Death Star display
case complete with 14 Star
Wars figures: this rarity was
only available at the San Diego
Comic Con back in 2011. The
Force was clearly awakened,
and this interesting assortment
contained in a perspex case,
caused plenty of activity. It
finally sold for £750, bang on

WORLD'S LARGEST LEGO STORE
The UK's new flagship LEGO Store in Leicester Square will open on
17th November. The new landmark store will be the biggest LEGO
retail store in the world, the 37th LEGO store in Europe and cover
two floors. A LEGO Big Ben, made from more than 200,000 bricks,
is currently being built brick-by-brick and will dominate both levels
of the store. The LEGO store version will also feature a working
clock face, which will be illuminated at night.
The store will also boast a LEGO shop, exclusive product sets, hands-
on building areas, building demonstrations and a Pick & Build Brick
Wall. “We want to inspire and develop children across the globe
through creative LEGO play experiences, and our LEGO Brand
Retail stores allow children, parents and fans to explore the many
different LEGO products while getting a truly unique and immersive
experience of the LEGO brand," said Loren Shuster, executive vice
president and chief commercial officer at the LEGO Group.

STOLEN MODELS REPORTED
On the 12 September a container holding over £150,000 worth of
diecast models, due to be delivered to Tiger Hobbies, was broken
into en-route to South Yorkshire. Over 840 items were stolen in total,
each worth more than £200. The load was made up of 763 Hobby
Master models and 84 Star Ace 1/16 Harry Potter figures. Gary Ford,
managing director of Tiger Models, is interested in hearing any news
you may have concerning the models: HA3323, a Northrop F-5E Tiger
II Patrouille Suisse; HA2418, a MIG-15bis No.25, Chinese People's
Volunteers Air Force, North Korea. Mr Ford can be reached on

South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident (crime
number B94911 2016) and can also be contacted with any relevant
details. Several days later John Ayrey Diecast, in West Yorkshire, was
also raided. A number of high value and limited edition models were
taken, including: 100 New Routemaster 9 Hammersmith Corgi60; 12
Jaguar XJR XJ40 1990, in metallic red; 24 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk1,
1974; 12 Ford Escort RS 1600 MKI #19 MC72 Makinen. If you have

HORSES AT HARTLEYS
The twice-yearly sale of toys and collectables held by Hartleys
Auctioneers in September was dominated by The Anthony Dew
rocking horse collection. The sixty-lot section produced over a quarter
of the sale total, with only one item going unsold. One of the most
striking items was a French Carousel or fairground horse (c.1885)
made by Gustav Bayol of Angers. In somewhat worn and original
condition it featured in a BBC Look North news preview which aired
the evening before the sale. This created much interest and it finally
sold to a French buyer on the telephone for £1,950. Elsewhere, a
large quantity of Meccano parts including some rare pieces, housed
in a 12 drawer cabinet sold for £620, while thirty four mainly early
Dinky cars all in well playworn condition reached £360.
