experienced, by traders and
modellers alike, in obtaining
various imported products, and
mirrored discussions I’ve had at
UK and European shows. Also
noticeable was how an apparent
lack of smaller local model shops
prompted many comments.
All this got me thinking
(especially as several years ago I
went on an overseas detachment
and on return discovered that
all four nearby model shops had
closed), as recently I’ve noted an
increased presence of smaller
retail outlets, at least in the
UK. Less than a fortnight after
returning from the US Nationals,
this impression was reinforced
when I heard of a fairly local
shop (within 30 minutes’ drive)
and on visiting, found it stocked
a far broader range of products–
including imports–than I was
expecting.
A discussion with
AMW’s
advertising team revealed there
appears to be growing activity
from independent retailers,
including one in my own home
town that I hadn’t known about…
could this be the beginning
of a renaissance for local kit
sellers? All too often we hear the
common lament that these are a
dying breed, yet if one scratches
beneath the surface, there might
more around than one thinks. So
if readers and clubs hear of a new
retailer, tell everyone about it,
then go and see what’s there!
Speaking of content, this issue
features Airfix’s all-new Jet
Provost Mk.3 and re-worked
Wildcat into Martlet format,
along with a gorgeous Kinetic
Mirage IIIE and Italeri Hunter
FGA.9…the latter part of our
continuing commemoration
of RAF Wittering’s 100th
anniversary year. Armour and
auto features are also included
and for builders of other genres,
while we aren’t currently able to
cover everything in each issue,
rest assured, these will be present
in forthcoming editions.

’ve often found that attending
shows sparks all sorts of
considerations, and one theme
popped up regularly at this
year’s US Nationals (see p.42).
