The Hewson Issue!
It’s with pleasure that we dedicate this
issue to one of the finest software houses
from
the
classic
8
bit
era,
Hewson
Consultants. Founded in 1980 by micro-
computer
enthusiast
Andrew
Hewson,
the
company first published the book Hints and
Tips for the ZX80, followed by a few more
books and a handful of mail order only games.
As the company grew, Hewson Consultants
released their first C64 game, Heathrow Air
Traffic Control, in 1984.
That was the beginning of a long history with
the breadbin that would see them release a
consistent stream of A grade games, including
Gribble's Day Out, Paradroid, Uridium and
Nebulus, to name but four. It was no
exaggeration that if you saw the Hewson name
on the inlay or box, it was a sure thing.
Andrew
Hewson
was
a
master
of
taking
enthusiastic bedroom coders and turning them
into superstars, releasing hit after hit and
establishing many names in the industry. Now,
Hewson is back, with Andrew’s son Rob
heading
the
publishing
and
development
division. He is leading the charge to work
with a new generation of indie teams and solo
developers and encouraging them to develop
their own innovative ideas, while utilising
the Hewson experience to take the company
into the next generation. We hope Hewson
succeed and wish them all the best with their
new endeavours!
As we head into this 9th issue of Reset, it’s
hard to believe that we have reached the half
way mark of 2016. It’s been a cracker of a
year so far for the C64 and the second half
is only going to build on that. RGCD,
Psytronik and Protovision have all been
productive, with a slew of releases already
out and many more in the pipeline before the
year’s end. The RGCD 16kb Cartridge Game
Development Competition didn’t disappoint and
once
again
encouraged
plenty
of
new
development with some new names emerging onto
the C64 gaming scene.
We are also holding our own competition at
Reset. The 4kb ‘Craptastic’ Game Coding
Competition has already seen a healthy number
of registered competitors as well as a
handful of submitted entries that won’t
disappoint. So read on! I hope you enjoy the
issue!

Hyper Sentinel Preview

Seeing that name again on
new games is something
special for us old folk.
Hopefully our slower
reflexes have still got what it
takes!

The brand new incarnation of
Hewson Consultants are going
straight back to their roots,
with their first release to be
the retro themed side-scrolling
sho ot er ,

Developed by Manchester based
indie outfit Four5Six Pixel,
Hyper Sentinel is billed as 'an
intense retro shoot 'em up
delivering
classic
arcade
action'. Getting excited yet?
Consisting of 12 levels, Hewson
promise gameplay features such
as epic boss battles, amazing
power ups and a combo chaining
system. Just to whet your retro
appetites a little bit further,
the
game
is
lovingly
handcrafted with 'spectacular
pixel
art
graphics'
and
a
'heart-pumping
SID-style
chiptune
soundtrack'.
And,
breathe..
After watching the gameplay
videos
and
seeing
the
screenshots, it's obvious that
Hyper Sentinel never strays too
far from it's roots, with 8 bit
shooter
classics
Uridium,
Zynaps and Slayer being obvious
influences. This is no bad
thing,
as
classic
gameplay
never gets old and the games
author and Four5Six Pixel's
sole developer, Jonathan Port,
obviously
has
an
eye
for
classic gameplay and mechanics.
Seamlessly
incorporating
modern tricks such as the super
smooth
colourful
graphics,
booming soundtrack and game
mechanics that just weren’t
technically possible back in
the day, means it is highly
likely that Hewson just may
have a winner on their hands.
Initially being developed for
iOS & Apple TV, ports to other
platforms are certainly in the
mix if stretch goals can be met
in the forthcoming Kickstarter
campaign, which should be live
soon after we go to press.
With Hewson's goal to become
'THE retro games label', Hyper
Sentinel could be the perfect
springboard for the return of
the classic publisher. What's
exciting for us is that Hewson
are
bringing
back
their
publishing model that helped
now legendary bedroom coders
and start-up teams such as
Andrew Braybrook and DICE get
their starts in the industry.
We
could
be
seeing
the
emergence of a new wave of
programming celebrities and the
innovative, original games that
Hewson were known for in the
days of the 8 bits.

Hyper Sentinel is gorgeous to
look at, with it’s fluid motion
and colourful pixel graphics. It
needs to be seen in motion to
fully appreciate how
wonderful it looks.

career. It wasn't until now (some 30 or so
years later) however, that I've had the
time and the platforms have been available
for me to take that step back to my
childhood
memories
and
make
a
game
myself. I have so many cherished memories
of games on the C64 and ZX Spectrum that
they have served as a natural inspiration
for my first game, Hyper Sentinel.
Four5Six Pixel is just me (for the moment
at least). I like to take on as much of
the game making process as I can, so the
numbers represent coding, combined with
pixel graphics. I've done the sound fx too
for
Hyper
Sentinel,
but
music
needs
specialist attention, so I needed an
expert to put the SID style soundtracks
together.
We had a chance to chat to Hyper Sentinel
coder and Four5Six Pixel founder, Jonathan
Port.
Reset: Hi Jonathan! Please tell us a bit
about yourself and Four5Six.Pixel
JP:
Hi! I'm Jonathan Port. I'm a husband
and father of 2 and live near Manchester
in the UK. I've been a professional
business programmer by trade for over 20
years.
I got into video games (or computer games
as they used to be known!) in the early
1980s right at the start of the game
explosion in the UK; I was around about 11
years old at the time we got our first
family computer, a 16K ZX Spectrum. I'm
fairly sure we got the computer for
educational purposes, but as everyone
knows, you don't come home from school to
do more homework! But games had me, as
with all my friends. I can remember
though, even at this early age, that I was
drawn not just to playing the games but to
the idea of conjuring up, myself, amazing
worlds to play in. I imagined it must be
akin to being a magician, and to be fair,
looking back at what the likes of Steve
Turner and Andrew Braybrook produced at
that time on the machines available, they
basically were. It was these early games
that got me hooked on making things by
programming, and it directly led to my

Hyper Sentinel is a space themed
arcade game first and foremost. It's not a
shoot 'em up in the traditional sense, or
a bullet hell style arcade game. Certainly
the later levels will require repeated
play to learn the layout and highest
scoring strategy. So, anyone who likes
