You know the look on someone’s face when they experience something new?
It’s magical. Like a child seeing their rst snow, or touching an animal. Or when
somebody climbs a mountain and gets an amazing view. This time of year – as the
kaleidoscopic contents of this issue show – can be hit-and-miss, weather-wise. You
could get the Arctic, you could get Antigua, or any shade in the middle. So if you
wanted to introduce someone to a mountain, it’s an uncertain time. It happened to
me in January, when I attempted to impart the virtues of hillwalking to a companion
in far from virtuous weather. I’d done the sensible thing: picked something small
(Loughrigg Fell in the Lakes) and unlikely to be prohibitively frozen, not covered in
cliffs or ridges, but with ‘wow’ views and a great summit. As we set off the wind and
rain were having a ght with the clouds, and the words ‘damp disaster’ loomed large
in my mind. But I don’t know why I was worried. As every UK walker knows, the
weather doesn’t
need
to be great. You don’t
need
endless views. It can be foul. And it
can still be fab. What was funny about this day was the person I was accompanying
up Loughrigg was Clare Balding, to whom I had promised a rewarding
introduction to the world of hillwalking for an episode of BBC Radio
4’s
Ramblings.
We got to the top, the clouds briey tore themselves
away from each other to reveal an astonishing view, and I saw
that
look. When I asked if she wanted to call it a day, she gave me another
look, and said “No! I want to keep walking.” Which says it all, really,
doesn’t it?
