THERE ARE MANY PATHS TO TOY TRAIN HAPPINESS – WHY LIMIT YOURSELF TO JUST ONE?
T
he other day, the 2016 edition of
Greenberg’s Pocket Price
Guide to Lionel Trains,
totaling 418 pages, landed on my
desk with a resounding thud. It’s the weight of history –
115 years have passed since Lionel started making electric
trains. For most of that time the company has been very, very
busy. One thing’s for sure – pretty soon we’re going to need bigger
pockets for our
Pocket Price Guides!
When you include the contributions of Atlas O, Williams by
Bachmann, MTH Electric Trains, and, recently, Menards, it’s
clear we enjoy an almost infinite variety of locomotives, rolling
stock, and accessories. Then, of course, there are all the struc-
tures, vehicles, figures, and scenery items. If you can’t find some-
thing appealing on a visit to your local hobby shop or online
retailer, it might be time to change your direction.
Take Ed Dougherty. A successful professional golfer on the
PGA Tour for many years, Ed is widely known to readers of
Clas-
sic Toy Trains
for assembling one of the nation’s most complete
collections of postwar Lionel trains.
Senior Editor Roger Carp caught up with Ed recently and
found he is still happily buying, selling, and collecting postwar
toy trains but these days however, Ed’s interests have broadened.
As you’ll see in Roger’s article on page 54, Ed has been busy
adding prewar gems to his collection. Ed says his new-found
interest in exploring the trains produced early in Lionel’s history
re-energized his interest in the hobby.
That’s fine for a dedicated collector like Ed, but what if you
just like to run trains? After you’ve figured out a track plan, built
your benchwork, and installed reliable wiring, what else is there?
In that case, author Stan Trzoniec says, your fun has just started!
Stan likes to keep the crews on his O gauge Delaware & Rari-
tan Valley RR busy switching the industries around the line. This
adds interest and doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated, as
you’ll learn from Stan’s entertaining and informative “Run like a
real railroad” article on page 32.
There are many ways to enjoy this hobby. Sometimes, as Ed
and Stan will tell you, a new approach is the best way to spark
fresh enthusiasm.
