RAF Fares Well in SDSR
Nine Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol
aircraft will be purchased by the RAF as part
of the UK Government’s National Security
Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security
Review (SDSR) 2015. The rst three are
expected to be in service by 2020 and will
be based at RAF Lossiemouth, Moray. The
P-8As will also have an overland surveillance
capability. Prime Minister David Cameron
unveiled the plans in the House of Commons
on November 23. The defence budget will
be increased in real terms every year of the
current Parliament and the SDSR lays out
plans to spend £178 billion over the next
decade on equipment and support.
The plan also con rmed the UK’s
commitment to purchase 138 Lockheed
Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The UK will
accelerate deliveries in the early 2020s to
enable 24 F-35Bs to operate from the new
Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers by
2023 – it was previously planned to eld just
eight by that date. As a result a second F-35
squadron will be formed as part of Joint Force
2025.
Two additional Typhoon squadrons will be
established, making seven frontline Typhoon
squadrons in total, each with 12 aircraft. The
additional squadrons will be equipped with

SDSR 2015.

Tranche 1 Typhoons that had been due for
retirement within the next two to three years. It
has not been announced when the additional
squadrons will be established or where they
will be based.
The RAF will continue to operate the
Tornado GR4 until it is replaced by the
Typhoon. Further investment will be made in
the Typhoon’s capabilities, including ground
attack and a new airborne electronically
scanned array (AESA) radar enabling the
type to remain in service until at least 2040,
ten years longer than previously planned.
Stormshadow and Brimstone missiles will be
introduced as planned on the Typhoon, and
continued investment will be made in new
precision weapons.
Plans to acquire “more than 20” armed,
remotely piloted Protector aircraft based on
the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper were also
con rmed. Cameron also revealed that the UK
will eld a “British-designed unmanned aircraft
[that] will y at the very edge of the earth’s
atmosphere and allow us to observe our
adversaries for weeks on end, providing critical
intelligence for our forces” It is believed this will

be Airbus Defence and Space’s Zephyr UAV.
The Sentinel will be upgraded and is to
remain in service into the next decade, while
the Shadow will remain operational until at
least 2030, and Sentry and Rivet Joint until
2035. The RAF is scheduled to eld eight
Shadow R1s by 2025; it currently has just ve
fully equipped Shadows, plus one used purely
as a crew trainer.
Fourteen C-130Js will be upgraded and
put through a life-extension programme
to continue in service until 2030 and the
remaining ten will be retired by 2022. The
Command Support Air Transport eet of
BAe146 CC2 and C3 aircraft will be replaced
as they reach the end of their life while one of
the existing Voyager aircraft will be adapted so
that, in addition to its primary air tanking role,
it can transport senior ministers securely. It
is stated that this will provide better value for
money than the current use of charter aircraft
and it would also be available to the Royal
Family.
Army Air Corps (AAC) Apache and RAF
Chinook helicopters will be upgraded, although
no speci c details were given. In 2025, there
will be three RAF Chinook squadrons and four
AAC Apache squadrons.
Major Order for Aerion SSBJ
Development of the Aerion AS2 supersonic
business jet took a step forward on
November 16 with a large $2.4 billion (£1.59
billion) order from Flexjet for 20 aircraft.
The fractional operator will make shares
available from 2023 when the rst AS2 is
due for delivery. The Aerion AS2 will have
a top speed of Mach 1.5 (approximately
1,150mph) and was recently redesigned
from a twin-engined aircraft to have three
16,000lb st turbofans, although the choice
of engine is yet to be made. The AS2,
which will carry up to nine passengers,
will have two cabins with a galley and
restrooms. Aerion has teamed with Airbus
to nalise the technical speci cation and
rst ight of the prototype is targeted for
2019.

P&W-powered Airbus A320neo Certified
Certification has been granted for the Pratt
& Whitney powered variant of the Airbus
A320neo.
The Pure Power PW1100G-JM
engine-equipped A320neo was approved
by both the European Aviation Safety
Agency (EASA) and US Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) on November 24,
becoming the first neo version to earn Type
Certification.
This followed a rigorous 14-month
certification programme. The three flight test
aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney engines
successfully accumulated more than 1,070
flight hours in some 350 flights. Of those
1,070 flight test hours, 300 were completed
with the same aircraft in an airline-like
environment to ensure operational maturity
at entry into service.

Hemisphere
Launched
Textron Aviation launched its new flagship
model, the 12-passenger Citation Hemisphere
at the NBAA (National Business Aviation
Association) Convention, held in Las Vegas
from November 17 to 19.
The Hemisphere will compete with large-
cabin long-range aircraft and the prototype is
scheduled to fly in 2019. It will have a range of
4,500nm (8,334km), a cruise speed of Mach
0.9 and a cabin width of 8ft 6in (2.6m).
The Hemisphere takes the place of
Textron Aviation unveiled its new Citation Hemisphere at the NBAA Convention in Las Vegas in
November.

MRJ Takes to the Skies
Mitsubishi Regional Jet JA21MJ lifts off on
the aircraft’s maiden flight.

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation carried
out the maiden flight of the first prototype
of its Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) on
November 11.

The first flight test aircraft (FTA 1),
JA21MJ (c/n 10001), was airborne from
Nagoya Airport for 90 minutes during which
the crew undertook basic handling and
functionality tests.
Speaking after landing at Nagoya the
captain, pilot Yasumura, commented:
“Operational performance of the MRJ was
much better than we expected, and we had
a significantly comfortable flight.”
Four more flight test aircraft will follow
in the coming months, including FTA 5,
JA25MJ (c/n 10005), painted in the livery of
launch customer All Nippon Airways.
Initial flight testing will continue at
Nagoya until the second quarter of 2016
when the test fleet moves to Grant County
International Airport at Moses Lake
in Washington state, where flying will
continue towards the type’s certification.
The company says the first deliveries to
customers are due to take place in the
second quarter of 2017.
