Experiential entertainment
In-flight entertainment is on the cusp of
a massive transformation. In fact, it is
going to take a giant leap and become
more experiential. Such a kind of
experiential entertainment was recently
unveiled
by
aerospace
engineering
firm Windspeed Technologies when it
launched SkyDeck. SkyDeck will give
passengers a 360-degree view from a
transparent bubble installed on the top
of a plane.
"The
next
aim
was
to
create
the
exciting
experiential
in-flight
contents
entertainment for VIP aircraft owners
and the airline industry," said Windspeed
Technologies. Elaborating more on the
technology,
Windspeed
Technologies
said, “Current in-flight entertainment
offerings have not changed much over
the decades. We wanted to come up with
a product that would provide a higher
level of entertainment to reduce the
boredom of long flights.”
Though the concept is still pending
for a patent, Windspeed Technologies
said its design was viable and would
not interfere with an aircraft's handling.
“The canopy would be made of materials
used in supersonic fighter jets — strong
enough to withstand birdstrikes and
other stress factors. An aerodynamic
'teardrop' shape will help reduce the
drag factor,” the company said.
According to the company, the cost of
SkyDeck installations will run between
$8 million and $25 million depending on
how many seats and whether it has a lift
or stairs. A similar type of concept was
also introduced by Zodiac Aerospace in
December 2015 that shows passengers
seated in a windowless baggage hold.

2015 augured well for Boeing and Airbus as the two top aircraft manufacturers’
A320neo and 737 MAX 8 aircraft garnered headlines. Airbus’ shot into the limelight
as it faced glitches in the delivery of its A320neos while on the flipside, Boeing rolled
out its first new 737 MAX 8 as scheduled. However, when it comes to the number of
orders in 2015, Airbus was ahead of Boeing. Now, it will be interesting to see which
plane-maker retains the top spot in 2016.
