OPEN A NEW SCENE IN MAYA
1. Go to
File -> Import
and select FBX in the “files of type” box

a. In the “Name Clash Options” box: Make sure “Use Namespaces” is unticked and
“Resolve: Clashing nodes with: this string” is selected with a blank text box.
Doing this removes the filename from each joint name.

Edit -> Select Hierarchy,
otherwise only the character’s hip will be moving
when you add the motion
4. Go to
Character -> Create Character Set
in order to create a character out of your
selected hierarchy
5. You can now save your FBX as a Maya Animation clip:
a. Go to
Window -> Animation Editor -> Trax Editor
b. With your character selected in the asset browser, inside the Trax Editor, go to
Create -> Animation Clip
c. This will load your animation clip into the Trax Editor. Select this clip by clicking
on it, and go to
File –> Export Animation Clip
d. Save this file somewhere to review later (.ma format)
OPEN SCENE WITH RIGGED CHARACTER:

Select the root of the character’s skeleton and go to
Edit -> Select Hierarchy,
as
before, this is to ensure the motion is applied to the entire hierarchy
Again, go to
Character -> Create Character Set
Open the Trax Editor again and go to
File -> Import Animation Clip To
Character
Ensure your playback speed is correct:
a. Go to
Window -> Settings/Preferences -> Preferences
b. Scroll down to
Settings: Time Slider -> Playback Speed: Real Time
In the Trax Editor: Click on the Load Selected Character icon
to load character
into the editor
Select the animation clip you wish to edit and right click on it. Then select Activate

MAYA TIPS AND TRICKS:
Shortcut keys in Maya:
Letter f = Frame the scene
↑↓ arrows = Go through skeleton hierarchy
Numbers 4 and 5 = Wireframe/shaded toggle
Tips:
If character disappears, check View → Select Camera: Far
clip plane - too short and it will clip character
To Make a Movie:
Go to:
Window -> Playblast
If any parts of the animation need tidying:
At the RHS of the screen, go to the tab
Channel
Box/Layer Editor: Anim -> Create Layer From
Selected
– this is on the tabs at the bottom of the
Editor
Rotate the selected bone as needed
Right Click on Rotate x/y/z in the Editor (Top RHS) and
select
Key Selected
To attach a bone to an object: Select the object and
bone and go to
Edit -> Parent
